Rhombus #DailyOutfit

Another Monday, another fresh start! Weeks are flying by! Can’t believe it’s already November. I’d say that November and January are my least favorite months of the year just because they’re usually really cold and dark months. Got so many things to do for work this month, so I’m certain it’ll go by fast and before I know it, I’ll be on my way to France! What do you like or dislike about November?

I watched a really great documentary this weekend called SOMM – a film that follows a few American candidates who are preparing to pass the Master Sommelier exam, the highest recognized level of sommeliers in the world. In 93 minutes you learn a whole lot not only about what it takes to because a Master Sommelier but also a lot about the culture, the history and the lives of the sommeliers not only in America but across the world as well. As someone who’s getting to know wine better and better, it was a really interesting flick to watch.

I picked the rhombus on my skirt as the theme for today’s daily outfit. Lot’s of dark colors mixed with a pop of white! I do fear that I will be dressing in a lot of dark colors again this winter but I will make a conscious effort to add more color to the mix this season.

WMCFW SS14 Day 1 Recap

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending two runway shows at the tents located at David Peacaut Square in Toronto for World MasterCard Fashion Week.

I was really excited to see Beaufille, since I had heard of them through several local blogs and via instagram. When I was looking them up, their site caught my attention right away with a very grungy chic vibe, loved the old photographs of Courtney Love, Kate Moss, Nirvana & more! Their current FW13 collection is grungy goodness so I was thrilled to see what they had in store for SS14.

First, their logo is super rad! I loved the fact that they used a surfer rock band to play live during the show. The guys had mad style and chops! All the models had gelled back straight long hair, some were wearing retro shades, others had layers of dark necklaces and others had interesting mid-arm jewelry. I loved that their show start with a lot of whites, then slowly got darker with light prints, then foam green, then sand color, a few shimery fabrics, then navy blue and dark pieces. Their look is effortlessly cool and edgy without losing femininity. I loved their laced pants, their jackets and long flowy dresses. The intricate detail they added in some of their dresses was also a nice touch. Below are some of my favorite pieces from last night’s show. I can totally see myself wearing all of these pieces next summer! Great way to start the night!

I was really looking forward to the second show last night: Pink Tartan‘s SS14 collection. I had seen her two previous shows so I knew I’d been in for a treat. The show started with a beautiful short film. She also decided to start the show with some white dresses and coats. She slowly transitioned to navy blue by layering the blue onto the white pieces, to then pale blue, cream, then black, bold flowers, bright yellow and then finishing up with some black and white combinations and two stunning dresses at the very end. Pink Tartan really knows how to work with the shape of a woman. All of her pieces are always so flattering and I feel they could fit women of all ages and sizes. I adored her navy blue jacket and skirt ensemble. I was also seriously coveting those mid-calf black shimery skirts and the white button up shirt dress. I appreciated the fact that she used simple pointed toe flats to not overpower her creations. Pink Tartan’s designs make me wish I worked in a high fashion office or that I could attend a polo match or Sunday afternoon tea. She always puts a modern and elegant twist on every design she makes. I was once again very pleased with her collection!

It was also lovely to see some familiar faces last night! I was happy to see one of my favorite ladies @CrystalGibson for a few minutes. Not only is she an amazing person but she’s also a style inspiration!

Night off tonight but I’m back on Wednesday for more! What did you think of the first night?

Feeling Like A Chick #DailyOutfit

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend? I went to the movies on Friday night to see the brand new Sandra Bullock and George Clooney flick Gravity in 3D. If you’re a big space, NASA or astronaut nerd, this will definitely be up your alley. It’s 90mins of beautiful images, action and a pretty decent storyline. George Clooney is effortlessly cool and funny and though isn’t present much throughout the film, his comic relief easily welcome. Not my favorite movie as of late, but worth watching!

I also checked out the new Cibo Wine Bar that just opened up two months ago on King Street West. I’ll have a full review of the restaurant for you later this week!

Today’s outfit makes me feel like a chick… I mean one of these! I kept the accessories to a minimum opting for a badass shark tooth statement necklace from OIA Jules!

Modern Crood #DailyOutfit

Last night I watched the new animation movie from Dreamworks, The Croods. I always love checking out the latest animated flicks to see the advancements in technology and the beautiful colorful worlds they’ve created. These movies are always super cute and funny. I had really enjoyed Pixar’s Brave last year so was looking forward to seeing The Croods. Voiced by Emma Stone, Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds, The Croods is set in the prehistoric era of  Pliocene. When The Croods’ family cave is destroyed by the changing world,  the family is forced to travel through unfamiliar territory into an enchanting world lead by an inventive and more evolved boy named Guy (Ryan Reynolds). The images and creatures in The Croods’ fantastical world are SO creative and colorful! This movie is so pleasing to the eye and soul. I highly recommend watching it!

So for today’s outfit, I’m rocking a modern Crood look! I had forgotten about this Zara dress that I got two years ago. Perfect for fall! Looking forward to the Sam Edelman event happening tonight at the Bay on Queen Street. Not only can you meet this amazing shoe designer but you could also win a full shoe wardrobe! Event details here.

Falling for Red #DailyOutfit

It’s a grey Monday today in Toronto! Exciting news if you’re a fan of basketball in Toronto. It was announced this morning that Drake was named the “Global Ambassador” for the Raptors and also that the NBA All-Star game will be coming to Toronto in 2016. Neato!

I spent a lovely weekend at home hanging out with friends, cooking, catching up on Netflix docs and watching the Breaking Bad finale with a group of BB enthusiasts. I had actually never watched the series before so it was funny to see just how into it people really were. Look at these cupcakes!!

I also checked out the brand new Denis Villeneuve film, his first real “Hollywood” production called Prisoners yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed the flick. Not only was it super well shot, the story kept us on the edge of our seats the whole time and the acting was really strong. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal deliver really poignant performances. Definitely worth seeing!

Nouveau Grunge #DailyOutfit

Bonjour!

Hope you had a fabulous day!

I’m stoked to finally be seeing a movie at TIFF tonight! I will be seeing Wasted Youth, an international film from Greece. It will unfortunately be the only movie I’ll get to see at this year’s festival due to my hectic schedule but this year’s line-up was absolutely stellar! Have you seen anything cool at the TIFF this year?

Yesterday, the season 2 premier of BRBR aired. This year, we’ve got a brand new studio, series and website! In case you missed it or like Canadian music and want to discover new talent, have a look below 🙂

I’m really honored to be featured on Lisa Ng’ rad new lifestyle blog for women called This Beautiful Day. Lisa is such an inspiring lady! She recently moved from Toronto to LA to continue her career there. You can check out the article here!

Keeping the “nouveau” grunge look going today, with a plaid skirt and my new Zara graphic tee! I attended a private school for a year and remember dreading wearing my plaid skirt uniform but a few years later, I kinda love it! This grunge trend is definitely growing on me a lot… I guess it’s only normal being a 90s kid 😉

Fall Pilot #DailyOutfit

Last night, Offner and I checked out the Beverley Hotel that just opened in downtown Toronto. Located on Queen Street West between Peter and John street, the new boutique hotel has a cute little rooftop patio with a nice bar as well as a few couches that people can reserve. Though the rooftop is relatively small, they have a rooftop grill and also lot’s of parasols to offer shade to their customers. We ordered some drinks as well as a little cheese appetizer that was really yummy! It was $10 for the appetizer and $12 for 9 oz Malbec and $13 for a cocktail. If you’re looking for a nice little place to unwind after work, definitely stop by! It’s got a great laid-back vibe!

Later in the evening, we watched a great new doc available on iTunes called “Dolphin Boy“, the story of a 17-year-old boy who goes through a very traumatic event and then gets prescripe dolphin therapy to try to heal. The film documents his incredible progress and the beautiful relationship he develops with his father. I highly recommend checking it out!

Today we’re shooting a first pilot for season 2. For today’s pilot, I’m wearing a cute little blue and white polka dot dress 🙂 So stoked on my curls, the makeup artist we have a work today rocks!

Dreamlike state #DailyOutfit

Still in a dreamlike state after seeing The Great Gatsby last night! I really felt transported in a magical and epic world. Though I had read the book in high school, I barely remembered the story last night when I went to see the movie. I was really impressed by Tobey, Carey and Leo‘s performances. I think they all played fabulously! I couldn’t help but get attached to their three characters. The way everything is filmed, the fashion, all the glamor, just makes the 2.5hrs go by so quickly! It had been a while since I’ve seen an enchanting movie like that.

There’s been a lot of talk about the costume design for the movie, I definitely hope to see the costume designer nominated at next year’s award season. The other thing that’s been getting a lot of attention as well is the soundtrack. Some didn’t like the juxtaposition between the time when the movie is set and the presence of Jay Z, Jack White, etc in the soundtrack. I just think that it makes the movie current is and just trying to portray the emotions that one feels when listening to that kind of music. All in all, a grand film that is definitely worth watching!

gatsby 2

As a side note, how great does Leo look in this movie?! Woah! As a teen, I totally had a crush on him during the Romeo + Juliet days but ever since then, I haven’t found him to be that charming. Well, he’s definitely back in my books now!

Today I’m wearing the comfiest pants on the planet: my forever 21 leopard print harem pants! I’m also rocking a lovely gift from my friend Jacquie, who just came back from London earlier this week. She was there on tour with her band The Balconies (have you checked them out yet? They’re the bomb! Proof here!) and took the time to visit a few vintage shops on Brick Lane and got my a super cute gold antler necklace. Thanks Jacquie!! 🙂

West Coastin’

Happy Tuesday from BC!

As you’re reading this, I’m (hopefully) on my way back from my first “bushwoman” adventure, which will have included a 6h hike and camping at the top of the Rockies.  I’ve been on the road a lot these past couple of months traveling for work, covering music festivals across Canada for BRBR but this is my first real vacation in a long time.

I’ve been going to California a lot these past couple of years for work and to surf but I hadn’t been back to BC since 2006, when I was tour managing The Expos and The One Night Band.  I’m happy to have taken a few days before heading down to California to explore more of BC.

The last few days have been spent, visiting Vancouver and exploring the beautiful small town of Squamish.  It’s my first time in Squamish and it’s absolutely beautiful.  Squamish is located in the middle of the rockies, just 40mins north of Vancouver.  Everyone here in the town here is really outdoorsy. Squamish is renown for its great rock climbing, mountain biking and also kite surfing.  So far, I’ve had the chance to check out “The Spit”, which is a famous place for kite surfing, swim and swing off Tarzan ropes in Brohm Lake, check out Squamish Days Logger Fest (super impressive logging competition) and visit the Brennan Park Aquatic Centre to do a few laps.  Check the pics below 🙂

Speaking of kite surfing, the other day I discovered this great kite surfing, surfing and SUP movie called “Antandroy” filmed on RED in Madagascar.  You can watch it here:

My next adventure will be my first EVER real hike up Whistler, with a night spent camping at the top of the rockies. I’m not gonna lie, this adventure is very daunting to me. Though I love nature, love being at the beach and surfing, I’ve never really been a “bushwoman”. I don’t like bugs, I’m scared of snakes, bears and whatever else lives in the woods.  So this should be interesting to say the least.  The thing I’m most looking forward to is the incredible view, flowers and lakes I’m supposed to see from up top.  I will definitely be posting some pics in the next couple of days.

Once I’m back, I’ll be staying in Squamish for a day or so to do some SUP and will then head back to Vancouver for a day before flying to California for the second part of my trip, where I’ll get to go SURFING!!!!! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m obsessed with surfing and everything surf-related. Though I’m not a great surfer, it’s the only thing I do that clears my head. For those of you who’ve never tried surfing, I highly recommend it!

That’s it for today. I leave you with Delta Spirit‘s rad track “California”, which they performed at Lollapalooza this past weekend in Chicago. Can’t get enough of this track. It rocks my socks off!

Much love,

Mel
