Making Gut Health a Priority this Spring

With spring in the air, now is as good of a time as any to do a little health check. The gut is often referred to as the engine of the human body, so taking care of one’s gut can have a big impact on your overall health. Did you know that taking probiotics like Renew Lifes Ultimate Flora Critical Care 50 Billion can positively impact your digestion and gut health? It wasn’t until recently that I realized the importance of maintaining a healthy gut.

With my health being my top priority, I wanted to get more information on what a probiotic actually is and its overall benefits. So, I got in touch with an expert on the subject who explained the following.

The state of a person’s gut can influence health in many ways. With optimal digestive health, vitamin and nutrient absorption increases, which can result in more energy, reduced signs of aging and better health overall,” explains Naturopathic Doctor and Renew Life Canada Spokesperson, Dr. Sara Celik, ND. “Few are aware that the digestive system affects immunity, inflammation, and other critical functions in the body. From food allergies to headaches and skin problems to anxiety, the gut is a key player in leading a healthy lifestyle. A body without a healthy gut is like a car without a working engine.”

Although everyone responds differently to probiotics, she states that she’s seen the following five benefits in over a decade of using probiotics in her practice:

  1. Improved digestion and a reduction in IBS symptoms such as gas, bloating and constipation.
  2. Reduced cold and flu as a result of a stronger immune system.
  3. Better skin – probiotics may help with occasional break outs in some cases.
  4. Fewer food sensitivities as a result of improved gastrointestinal health.
  5. Less fatigue since improved digestion results in better absorption of vitamins from food.

The use of probiotics can be especially beneficial to women, as we are more prone to occasional constipation and digestive health issues than men are. It can also help women with chronic yeast infections and urinary tract infections better balance their good and bad bacteria. Renew Life’s line of probiotic supplements offers a variety of potency, multi-strain probiotic formulations to choose from and Renew Life has been focused on digestive health for over two decades. Dr. Sara says, “The potency or culture count refers to the total amount of live, ‘friendly’ bacterial cultures per dose. Since each person has unique needs, it’s important to select a probiotic supplement that best suits the individual. Since probiotics are alive, a delivery system such as enteric coating will ensure the bacteria arrive alive in the intestines where they are mostly needed,” adds Dr. Sara.

In addition to taking supplements, adding gut-friendly foods to your diet can also help deliver health benefits. Foods such as yogurt, fermented vegetables, Jerusalem artichokes, onions, garlic, and bananas are all great for your gut.

So, with that new knowledge, I’ll be doing a different kind of “cleaning” this Spring, focusing on my gut and making sure my digestive health is at the top of its game.

Spring Beauty Essentials

With spring just around the corner, the weather changing and the possibility of spending more time outdoors, I felt compelled to share some of my recent go-to beauty products that I’ve been incorporating into my beauty routine. Most of these products are either green or very clean so I’m thrilled to share them with you all today.

I take this Californian green beauty product with me on my travels and use it either once or twice a day depending on the weather and how my skin feels.

DERMA E Hydrating Night Crème

This clean night cream has been my go-to these past couple of months. Its extra-rich properties deeply penetrate the skin helping to moisturize and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. The cream is enriched with antioxidants, Vitamins C and E as well as aloe. It also helps your skin fight against free radicals and the effects of the environment. It is also, 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten free and GMO-free.

Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum

Slowly getting to know this incredibly popular and successful line of products. This overnight serum helps enhance skin nourishment, cell renewal and also hydrates your skin while you sleep. Argan and rose oils help revitalize your skin and smooth away fine lines. This product contains no artificial fragrances or colors.

Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer

Dermalogica’s primer is a great asset in your daily makeup routine because it does many things at once. Not only does it contain SPF 30, thus protecting you from the sun but it also helps smooth away fine lines while also creating a great base for your makeup, so that your makeup lasts all day. I usually combine this primer with my moisturizer and face oil.

EOS Active Protection Lip Balm

EOS’s latest product combines jojoba oil, shea butter and antioxidant-rich Vitamin E along with SPF 30 to create a lip balm that will not only nourish your lips but also protect them from harmful UVA/UVB rays while you’re outdoors. The lip balm is also 80 minute water resistant as well as PABA-free, Petrolatum and paraben-free. I know it will become my go-to on warmer spring days or in the summer while I’m out running or surfing!

Belif Cleansing Gel Oil Enriched

This Belif product is the latest addition to my daily beauty and wellness routine. Their light gel cleansing oil helps remove makeup and residue while also leaving the skin feeling refreshed. The oil is free of synthetic fragrances, dyes, preservatives and animal-origin ingredients.

Belif Peat Miracle Revital Cream

I have been blending this Belif cream along with my face oil and primer every morning. The cream which contains peat extract, helps rejuvenate and hydrate the skin while also helping to increase the cell turnover cycle of your skin. This cream is free of synthetic fragrances, synthetic colors, preservatives or any animal by-products.

Consonant Natural Foaming Face Wash

Consonant have become one of my favorite organic and green beauty brands. Added bonus – they’re Canadian! I recently tried their 30-day discovery kit and realized that their products left my skin feeling great throughout. I particularly liked their 100% natural face wash that is packed with tea tree oil and grape see oil that help not only remove makeup but also hydrate the skin and fight blemishes. It is the perfect travel buddy!

Consonant Ultra Moisturizing Organic Face Cream For Dry Skin

Another great travel-friendly product is their non-greasy hydrating face cream. The use of cassia angustifolia seed extract and grape seed oil help with hydration and also work as antioxidants to help make your skin feel hydrated and radiant.

Saje Wellness Tingle Mint Invigorating Foot & Body Lotion

Get your feet and legs feeling minty fresh and energized post-shower with Saje’s 100% natural, vegan and plant-based peppermint, shea and tea tree lotion. Their body lotion has become a favorite of mine post-runs and also in the morning.

April is a good month! There are several reasons why: Spring is here, the days are longer, it’s warmer out, I can finally put away my winter jacket and I can start riding my bike again! This month also marks the beginning of my journey towards the Nike Women’s 15k race in June. Watch for my special blog post tomorrow about what I’ll be doing leading up to my 1st ever 15k race. I’m so excited!! What are some of your favorite things about April?

NYFW Spring ’15 – Day 7

Despite the fact that it was the before last day, there were still some great shows taking place at NYFW yesterday. My discovery of the day was hands down –  Elie Tahari. I think that she presented looks that had lot’s of interesting textures and layers. I liked that she explored different fabrics and combined them together. I also loved her shoe selection, that resembled the classic TOMS shoe but with more of an edge.

Maxi Skirt #DailyOutfit

Yesterday, I had mentioned ankle boots being one of my favorite things for spring. A second thing that is worth investing in for this season is also a maxi skirt. You’ve probably seen them all over fashion magazines, on runways and on the street already. Graphic maxi skirts are also super cool. I had purchased the one I’m wearing today last spring at H&M for a whopping $20. I’m definitely considering adding more to my wardrobe this season as well. Pretty much every store are carrying them right now, Topshop has a huge selection and so does ASOS and Forever 21, H&M, etc.

Keep It Lite #DailyOutfit

With spring finally deciding to show  up, I couldn’t be more excited to have received an amazing package from British Columbia (by the way, I’m so due for a visit soon!!) this past weekend. I got some rad new shoes from a Canadian brand called Native Shoes. You may have heard of them already if you’re a big Trouble Andrew fan as he is one of the brand’s ambassadors. You may have also seen their super colorful and quirky ad campaigns, they kind of look straight out of a Wes Anderson movie. If not, a bunch of celebrities including Obama‘s daughters have been spotted sporting these kicks. The reason why I love these shoes so much is that a) as their motto states, they’re super lite and also comfy, b) they’re the perfect post-surfing/wakeboarding/SUP shoe because they’re waterproof and easy to clean c) they’re Canadian!! I’m also a big fan of all of the colors they have for the spring.

Though it’s still a little too chilly to sport them every day, I figured I’d take them out for a trial run today on this beautiful Monday along with my new Anine Bing cropped jeans. What are some of the clothes you’re excited to wear now that the weather has gotten a tiny bit warmer?! Let me know!

More Color #DailyOutfit

Apologies for the lack of updates these past couple of days. Right after spending a few hectic days at World MasterCard Fashion Week I left for NYC at the crack of dawn on Friday. I’m beyond thrilled to have attended the School Of Style this past weekend at the Ace Hotel in Manhattan. The coolest Christmas present! I’ll be posting a new NYC travel blog shortly with more info about the school. Can’t wait to continue my training with them this spring/summer and be able to get my diploma!

Speaking of spring, like most of you, I’m extremely tired of wearing dark colors. I’m currently listening to a lot of “spring” records including this rad new record from a band called Language Arts. Tracks like these definitely add a bit of magic and color to my day. What are your current spring favorites? What colors are you stoked about for Spring?

Blue & Yellow #DailyOutfit

Getting ready for the Festival d’été de Québec today. Really excited to attend the festival for a 7th year in a row! The FEQ is without a doubt one of the best organized and raddest festivals to attend in North America! Crossing my fingers for good weather because we have so much stuff to shoot for BRBR while in Quebec City! Keep an eye out for interviews and performances as well as new segments with – The Balconies, The Hunters, Xavier Caféïne, Ponctuation, Doldrums, Austra & more! We’re also organizing a rad “after-party” on July 7th. I’ll post up all the deets shortly but here’s what you need to know:

WHO: BRBR x I. Found

WHAT: 1 band + 2 DJ sets FREE! Beers, Skate Ramp & More!

WHEN: July 7th – 10pm

WHERE: Quebec City, Qc

Rare color combination for today’s daily outfit. I decided to challenge myself today and wear some clothes that I don’t usually wear much. I find that it’s a good exercise to do once in a while, to see if you still like to wear some of your clothes or if it’s time to donate them! Feeling like a mermaid with this shinny blue skirt… I think today’s outfit was most likely influenced by the doc I watched on Dolphins last night 😉 *nerd*

Flower Power #DailyOutfit

What a gorgeous day it is in Toronto! Perfect day for a little bike ride to work and to enjoy the sun! Really looking forward to the long weekend!!

I guess I was feeling the effects of the sun this morning when I got dressed. Bright colors and neon flowers is what I opted for. I’ve done it before but I really like matching my neon floral shirt with my mint green skinnies!

Sometimes, I look back at my daily outfit posts and can really tell what mood I was in, just based on how girly or how rock n’ roll my outfits were… What does my outfit say about my mood today?!

Montreal in May #DailyOutfit

Montreal is finally starting to warm up and is looking very pretty with all the trees and flowers in bloom. There’s no doubt that the city really comes alive in the summer. I’ll be heading back in just over a month to cover the Polaris Prize Long List announcement as well as the Francofolies de Montréal, a great Francophone music festival that features French artists from around the world.

Had a bunch of meetings on Friday in Montreal and this is what I wore!
