Northern Ontario

Happy Thanksgiving to all Canadians!! Hope you’re enjoying your long weekend!

Spent the past week in Northern Ontario traveling for the television show we’re filming across the Canada. On our off days, I’ve been trying to explore each city as much as I can.

This past weekend, I was in Thunder Bay. My last visit here dates back to 2006, while I was on tour across North America, tour managing two bands. I didn’t get much time to visit, so I wanted to make sure I hit up as many spots as I could this past weekend.

I loved rediscovering the downtown core, some of their newer restaurants and coffee shops. I particularly liked hanging out on Bay St. and Algoma St., it’s a sector that seems to be really developing. It has a lot of Finnish and Scandinavian shops but also a ton of cool places to eat and hang out. Calico Coffee Shop was my go-to hang out spot on Saturday and The Growing Season Juice Collective is without doubt my favorite healthy restaurant in the city. They make amazing vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as healthy cold-pressed juices.

I also really enjoyed visiting their comic shop, the Comic Zone, a place where you’ll find amazing vinyls, dvds, comic books, action figures, etc. So many gems in this shop! Nordcity was also really neat. I think the architecture and the look of the shop really goes well with Northern Ontario.

We also went for a run on Sunday and checked out the Terry Fox Monument, so make sure you check back soon for a full recap of Thunder Bay’s running routes for my #13Cities13Runs blog series, they are truly beautiful!

April is a good month! There are several reasons why: Spring is here, the days are longer, it’s warmer out, I can finally put away my winter jacket and I can start riding my bike again! This month also marks the beginning of my journey towards the Nike Women’s 15k race in June. Watch for my special blog post tomorrow about what I’ll be doing leading up to my 1st ever 15k race. I’m so excited!! What are some of your favorite things about April?

Friday Explorations

Taking a much needed day off today! It’s been a while since I took time off during the week and I almost forgot what it’s like to be off when most people are at work.

When I first moved to Toronto, I worked from home quite a bit, so it was nice to have a flexible schedule and be able to take some days off when I had worked a lot during the week. It’s nice to explore the city, visit your favorite stores or your local coffee shop without the weekend madness!

I made sure I started this rare Friday off in the best way possible – at The Drake Hotel. This past year, The Drake Hotel has really become a weekend staple. They have an amazing and inexpensive brunch menu plus they make everything homemade from scratch. They just began serving a new brunch and lunch menu with more seasonal dishes, which all seem incredibly tasty. I had Nona’s Frittata this morning, it was incredibly hearty and delicious!

What made my Friday even 10x better was receiving a lovely package from one of my favorite jewelry designers in LA – COMMUNION by Joy! So stoked on this cute handmade rose gold ear stud! I rarely wear earrings since I’m allergic to anything that isn’t real gold, so this beautiful unique piece will without a doubt become my daily go-to piece!

What do you usually do when you get a day off? What are you up to this weekend?

Took a beautiful stroll on the waterfront in Toronto this evening after work. I love having time to walk around and explore my city without having a particular goal in mind. I love breathing in the cool and crisp fall air. The walk was very welcome after a busy day at work!

Grand Bend

Hope you all had a lovely weekend! So nice to finally be home again! A brunch and a movie was in order this weekend. I saw 22 Jump Street, which was an ok sequel to 21 Jump Street. The movie had some funny moments but the story is basically the same. The one thing that was cool was the fact they kept alluding to the production budget during the movie and that the studio had allotted twice the budget to basically remake the same film over again hah!

I also went to a super fun day trip to Grand Bend. It had been a while since I went there. It’s only 2.5 hrs away from Toronto. I like Grand Bend, because it’s a lot cuter than Wasaga Beach. They recently built new restaurants and art galleries right by the marina, which is a super sweet spot to grab lunch or dinner. The new Smackwater Jacks Taphouse has a really great patio, with their very own beer on tap and local fish to choose from. Grand Bend is also a great place to go buy antiques for a lot cheaper than in the city. And if a packed beach isn’t your thing, try visiting the Pinery Park and campground, the beach is absolutely stunning and barely occupied. It’s $16 per car for a day at the beach. It is the ideal spot to picnic and swim! (yes we did swim…or snorkelled for some… I could barely feel my legs after being in the water for a few minutes, but it was well worth it!!)

I’m keeping the Grand Bend beach and summer vibes going today with my brand new green Mendocino shorts. These cute drawstring shorts are ultra comfy and practical. I love the cutout pattern at the bottom, it gives them a “dentelle-like” feel. I paired the shorts with my leopard & gold tank and some gold accessories!

Winter Grunge #DailyOutfit

Yesterday was a big day for my friends The Balconies! They finally launched their brand new record Fast Motions after almost a two year delay. I couldn’t be more stoked for these guys. I truly believe they’ve got what it takes to take on the world with their infectious guitar-driven rock tracks! If you haven’t already, make sure you listen to Fast Motions. For Canadians, you can check it out here & for everyone else here. Stay tuned as they’ll be coming to a city near you this winter, spring and summer!photo (61) Also, personally very excited on getting my first official styling credit in the album, yay!

Laid Back #DailyOutfit

Today was a much needed day off! After working over 100 hours + in the last two weeks, it was nice to finally sleep in a little and not have anything to do!

The one thing I did take time to do, was to take care of myself – meaning eating healthy homemade food, nap (I never nap!!) and go for a run! Though it’s getting a lot colder in Toronto, I’m still making it a habit to go run a few times a week.

For today’s outfit, I opted for a very laid back look. I rarely wear wool socks and plain leggings out but today was that kind of day. I tried to accessorize my look – by adding a bunch of silver and green jewels to make it a little less plain.

I’ve been seeing a lot of zebra print in lookbooks, on pinterest and in celebrity style pages lately. So I was super stoked when Offner came home with a pair of Zebra slacks for me the other day. I love these H&M trousers because they’re the perfect amount of stretch and comfort. I find they look rad with my Anine Bing boots & Vanessa Mooney necklace.

After shooting the show, I rushed over to see my first ever Pink Tartan runway show.  The place was packed! The show started off with some bright colors, long flowy coats and 50s & 60s-inspired flower prints. I really loved the bold blues, purples and pinks. The show continued with some lovely fur coats: some even had mixed colors. There were also a few leopard pieces, a handful of black and white dresses and coats, shimmery fabrics and lot’s of fur collars. One of the items I loved most, were the long leather gloves that all the models were wearing to accompany the coats and dresses. My top piece was without a doubt the multi-colored long fur jacket.  Though I don’t usually wear real fur myself, I still really loved the overall look of this coat!  You can see a few pics from the show below. Apologies for the quality of these photos, they really don’t do the collection justice. Looking forward to more Pink Tartan runway shows!

I also had the chance to meet a handful of lovely Toronto fashion bloggers including one of my recent favorites: Dainty Girl. She looked stellar with her black and white dress and Myles Sexton custom spike headband!

Today, I’ll be spending part of my day at the Marriott shooting interviews for BRBR.  Really looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new people! I decided to go with a bold red jacket, black and white stripes and a few gold/brass accessories.
