Today, Offner and I are celebrating our 1 month wedding anniversary.
I hesitated doing an actual blog post about the wedding itself for a while but figured I could share a few photos from the beach ceremony. It’s not that I don’t want to share with everyone how magical and dreamy the whole thing was but it’s mostly because it still all seems very surreal. Additionally, I’ve been very personal on my website and have always included Offner in my posts, but this is something that I wanted to keep as intimate and private as possible because of how special it was to me.
Growing up, I always wondered if I would get married one day. I’ve always been a hopeless romantic and always fantasied about what it would be like to be a wife one day. Life is filled with so many twists and turns, that I never knew if I would find that person I would want to spend the rest of my life with one day.
The past couple of years with Offner have brought me so much joy, laughter, serenity and have made me feel so alive. Our life together has been such a beautiful adventure. He keeps me on my toes, he teaches me so much and for the first time in my life, I’m with someone who truly accepts me for who I am, supports me 100% and gives me all of his heart. So to us, getting married in a time where there’s so much negativity around, we just saw it as a positive gesture and a way to share love and positivity.
Additionally, a wedding and marriage can mean so many things for so many different people. We wanted to do it 100% our way and all by ourselves (it was SUPER diy!). So we did. California, the beach, gold outfits, tacos, booze cruise, donuts, etc., the #MeetTheOffners wedding was exactly how we wanted it to be and we wouldn’t of had it any other way. We kept it super intimate and had the honor of sharing it with the most wonderful group of people.
I am truly humbled by all the kind words, well wishes and support we’ve received this past month. I cannot believe it’s already been a month since this all happened. When I think back my heart is filled with so many emotions. It really feels like it was the most beautiful dream. I’m excited to see what the future has in store for us and can’t wait to continue this adventure with my husband, Offner.
Back in Toronto after being on the road for almost a week. I had a great time in Ottawa! I was able to eat at some of my favorite spots in the city: Murray Street (the best cheese & wine in Ottawa!) and also a new hotspot called Sidedoor : where they served the most delicious donuts!! I also really loved their tacos and all of their sharing plates. You have to hit these two restaurants on your next trip to the Canadian capital!
Getting use out of my shorts today! It may be hella cold out but wearing tights with shorts is always a fun look. It makes me think that summer is only a few months away… Can’t wait to soak up some sun rays in Miami and LA next month!
Today is the day I leave for my month long adventure with @offner! So grateful to be traveling with him again! Excited to be visiting three different countries during this upcoming trip. We’ll be spending the first two and a half weeks in France, followed by a few days back in Canada then off to the US for some snowboarding!
I will be taking a little blogging break during my trip but will post as many updates as a can while on the road. I will also have a full recap with some of my favorite hot spots when I get back, so stay tuned!
Wishing you all a wonderful start to your holidays!!
Two weekends ago I was able to spend a few days in Miami. My last visit to Miami dates back to last November but I had only spent 48hrs in this tropical wonderland. Growing up in Quebec, Florida was always a very popular destination for my family in the winter. I think my first ever trip as a baby was to Orlando when I was just a few months old. I’ve done the Orlando/Disney trip a handful of times, stayed in West Palm Beach with my grand-ma, went to Fort Lauderdale a few times but hadn’t spent too much time in Miami before.
So I was really happy to have more quality time there to discover some of the city’s hotspots.
Summer isn’t necessarily the best time of year to head to Miami, that’s when it tends to rain a lot just because it gets so humid and hot. We got lucky with the weather, it only rained one morning out of four and a half days. It was 42+ celsius and sunny the whole time.
We spent most of our time at the beach, the water was SO warm! It is also really clear and the ocean floor is soft and sandy, so you can see all sorts of tropical fish swimming around you. It’s beautiful! Though a little pricey – $50 a day for two chairs and a parasol but you can come and go as you please the entire day, we made sure to protect ourselves from the hot sand and intense sun. There’s really nothing quite like swimming in the ocean. It’s oh so relaxing!!
I was able to do a little bit of shopping while I was there. My two favorite spots are: Collins Ave. (where you’ll find everything from Zara to LF, to Armani, etc.) and also the pedestrian outdoor shopping area on Lincoln Road.
I’m a huge fan of Art Deco so seeing all the different art deco hotels, buildings, clubs, museums, etc. are so amusing to me. We took the time to visit one of their Art Deco themed museum – the Wolfsonian FIU, located on Washington Ave. They had interesting collections on women and sports, Zeppelins, Art Deco, Architecture, etc. It’s only $7 per person and will take 1-2 hours of your time.
3 favorite places to eat:
The Dutch – is located in the W Hotel in South Beach. They offered a brilliant fall fixed price menu with one appetizer, one main and a dessert. Everything everyone had there was absolutely to die for! The wine selection was also top notch! The vibe of the place was cozy yet stylish, the staff was knowledgeable and super helpful. I loved my dinner there and can’t wait to go back!
Otentic – I officially found the best cheese platter in Miami. This small restaurant located on Washington Ave. makes typical French dishes. I loved drinking a Monaco (beer & grenadine drink), their charcuterie boards and salads are also killer. They make a mean chocolate mousse! I love their attention to detail, offering customers a free glass of white wine and tapenade as soon as you walk in. The owner Aurélien (yup, same name as Offner!) is super young and friendly. A must!
The Forge – Loved eating at this over the top Art Deco inspired restaurant. The atmosphere was young, hip and fun! The styling of the place was unreal. They had a special on Veuve Clicquot champagne the night we went so if you ordered a glass of champagne at the bar, they would serve you unlimited appetizers. Unreal! The food was also heavenly. They had very tasty bread baskets and a fabulous selection of wine. I had the soup and grilled cheese, Offner had the burger and his parents, the biggest steak I’ve ever seen! Their little dessert tray was also yummy. It’s a festive place with loud music so if you’re looking for a quieter spot, this may not be the place for you!
Now for something completely different, the 11th Street Diner located on Washington and 11th Street is also a superb place to grab some quick breakfast or lunch. It’s the original building that was constructed in 1948 in New Jersey that they moved to Miami in the 1990s.
A bar to check out:
The Broken Shaker – is located in the hip Freehand Miami hostel. Offner always loves checking out up and coming bars in every city we visit. He had heard of this place because of their original handcrafted drinks made from ingredients, herbs & spices directly taken from the place’s garden. We tasted their savory sweet and spicy homemade punch. They also had a tremendous outdoor garden/patio with a pool, lot’s of fun seating areas, little lights, trees, ping pong tables, etc.

Finally, if you’re looking for a cool morning or afternoon excursion, I highly recommend taking a trip to the everglades at the Everglades Safari Park. I’m not one to do too many touristy things on vacation but this was really well organized, informative and fun. For $40, they take you from South Beach (the location of your choice) on a 40min bus ride to the everglade national park. You then go on a 45min airboat tour where they teach you about the different species of snakes, alligators, wildlife, etc. in the national park. That is followed by an informative alligator demonstration (no one wrestles with alligators!) and time to walk around their sanctuary where you can see all sorts of alligators, crocodiles, lizards, etc. They then take you back to your hotel in South Beach. Honestly, well worth the money and super amusing!
Our time in Miami went by SO fast! With it only being a 3hr flight from Toronto, it’s the perfect long weekend destination! Can’t wait to go back soon!
Can’t say I’m thrilled with the current weather situation in Toronto these days… but who is?! I was hoping to come home and have it finally be summer in the city but to my utter disappointment, we’re still far away from the summer warmth and sunshine! I definitely try to appreciate the little bit of sunshine we’ve been getting any way I can!
This morning I finally received the last part of my birthday gift from @offneraurelien, straight from Paris! Wohoo 🙂 I received a few pieces from the brand new Springsioux collection! I couldn’t be more thrilled to be repping this rad up and coming brand from Paris here in North America 🙂 I first got one of their rings on my last visit to Paris in December and haven’t taken it off since! Today, I received one of their latest rings – the Horns Ring plus three items from their special collaboration with the Parisian tattoo artistEddie Czaicki. I love his take on mexican art and the lady muerte. Can’t wait to wear these! Springsioux will be opening up their first concept store in Paris next month and will be doing their official store launch on July 6th… So wish I could be there! To follow the tribe, go here.
Sorry I’ve been neglecting the blog lately. I decided to not bring my computer on vacation for once (I think it’s only happened once or twice in the last five or six years) and also didn’t have access to very good wifi where I was staying.
I hope that you’ve all been doing well! It was definitely nice to get away for a bit and refuel before the crazy festival season that starts later this week! I’ll post a little recap and “best of” from my vacation later this week. It was really nice to be back in California, to see friends, eat good food, hang out, surf and relax!! I also had the BEST birthday, thanks to @offneraurelien. A big thank you again to everyone for all of the kind birthday wishes! It was a very memorable birthday!
Now, it’s back to work and it’s pre-Francofolies de Montréal crunch time! I leave Wednesday morning for 10 days, so I’ve got so much to prepare leading up to this festival. In addition, to all of the festival madness, I’m also going to be hosting a very special livestream on Thursday June 13th at 11am EST, live from the Polaris Prize Long List unveiling. You can tune in live via BRBR‘s facebook page: here. I’ll post the exact link later on in the week. Following that, I’ve also been asked to be one of the panelists on the Polaris Salon being held that same afternoon live from the Phi Centre in Montreal. For more info, or to attend, go here.
When I got back yesterday, I had a lovely package waiting for me from Uranium 🙂 I decided to wear their rad new tank for today’s outfit along with my brand new Verameat hand necklace. I got to check out her Beverly Hills shop while I was in LA, what a cute little spot!
Yup… Frigid! I biked to work wondering if it was March instead of late May today. I desperately should have worn gloves and probably could have done without the big wedges. @offneraurelien makes fun of me because I always bike in heels or wedges. I admit it probably isn’t the best footwear for biking but I’m definitely getting better at it. Anyone else bike in heels?
This weather just makes me more and more excited about going to LA next week. Seriously… the spring in Toronto this year has been pretty ridiculous. I’m back to wearing my big leather jacket and socks it’s so cold.
Who’s excited for the weekend? On my to do list this weekend: packing for LA, dropping by The Black Box Boutique for the I’MONIQ new collection launch (deetshere), running and enjoying the sunshine! What are your plans for the weekend?
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Wishing you a very lovely day! Today is also my little (who’s not so little anymore) sister Amy’s birthday! Today she turns 25! I’m so proud of her. She’s currently studying law at U of Ottawa. She’s super passionate about the environment and animals and I know she will make a great lawyer in the future! Happy Birthday Amy!
I’m also very thankful to have this wonderful guy in my life! Not only is Aurelien my partner but he’s also one of the brains behind the amazing show I get to work on every day – BRBR. He is also a very talented video director (you can see some of his work here & here) and all-around amazing person! Lucky to have him in my life!
For today’s outfit, I’m wearing my favorite Zara diagonal zip blazer that I got in NYC, my cheetah tank, my VERAMEAT & Asos rings and my Steve Madden studded boots. Also, today is the LAST day you can obtain 33% off anyVERAMEAT purchase when you enter my sepcial discount code: MELSAYS. Go take a look on their website!
Happy New Year everyone!! Wishing you a magical 2013! Today, I decided to do a little blog post of some of my favorite things from my recent trip to France.
1 – Le Marais, Paris.
Le Marais is a great area located in the 3rd and 4th districts in Paris. It’s an area filled with lot’s of little shops, local designers (The Kooples, American Retro, etc.) cool cafés, bistros and restaurants. I spent lot’s of my time in Paris walking around and hanging out in Le Marais. I definitely recommend it for all of those who are looking for a cool and hip area to spend time in.
2 – Springsioux
Springsioux is a Paris-based jewelry, clothing and accessory brand run by two rad young entrepreneurs. I love Springsioux for its perfect blend between rock n’ roll and elegant pieces. Nikki Sixx, Bradley Soileau and other celebrities have been spotted with some Springsioux swag. I’m the lucky owner of a Lady Muerte ring from their most recent collection. I absolutely love it! I know this is just the beginning for Springsioux!
3 – L’Épicerie, Lyon
I spent a few days in Lyon while I was a France. For those who don’t know, Lyon is renown around the world for their culinary excellence. I definitely didn’t go hungry in that city! My favorite little restaurant is a little bistro recommended by @offneraurelien in the Bellecour area called L’Épicerie. The concept of the bistro – to serve tartines, which is basically toast with toppings on it. It may sound plain but I assure you that the restaurant was anything but plain. Their food is cheap, tasty and creative. They also have delicious homemade desserts.
4 – Le Cellier, Les 2 Alpes
I was lucky enough to have the chance to go skiing in the Alps during my stay in France. While at Les 2 Alpes, I was also introduced to a delicious raclette restaurant called Le Cellier. I love the little chalet-style decorations, wood stove and delicious comfort food. For those who don’t know what raclette is, it’s a Swiss dish based on heating the cheese and scraping off (racler) the melted part onto either meat or veggies.
These were just some of my “coups de coeur” from my recent France trip. I sincerely hope you will also have the chance to visit France one day or return if you’ve been there before. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do. I love learning about other cultures, meeting new people and opening myself up to the rest of the world. It’s through traveling that I’ve met some of my best friends and made some of my longest lasting memories.
Wishing you all a wonderful 2013 filled with tons of travels!
Happy Holidays everyone! Hope you’ve all been having wonderful holidays thus far! Apologies for the little break last week, I was out of the country and had very limited access to reliable internet. Here’s this week’s ear candy:
I must admit, this first video and track totally made my day when I first saw it. Yes, it’s a surfing video but it’s also a great downtempo chill track. The track totally transports me into another world. The track I’m talking about is, Peaking Lights‘ dreamy “Beautiful Dub”, taken from their 2012 release Lucifer In Dub (a dubbed-out version of their latest LP Lucifer). Hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did!
So happy that there’s a brand new Charli XCX single out. The track is called “You Ha Ha Ha”. The young UK pop singer is definitely one of my favorite artists of 2012. Super excited for her debut full-length to be released in the new year. In the meantime, you can listen to the track here:
I just spent the past ten days on vacation in France. Over the years, I’ve always listened to the music that was coming out of this great country but it was only this past year, thanks to @offneraurelien, that I really tuned into what was being done across the Atlantic. While, I was in France, I spent a lot of time listening to French radio to really get a feel for the stand out artists in the country. One of the names that really stood out, is the Caen rapper Orelsan. If you’ve never heard of him, I highly recommend checking him out. He’s articulate, intelligent and not afraid to rap about France’s current social issues. Here’s his track “Suicide Social” –
And his latest hit “Si Seul” –
So there you have it for this week! Have a lovely weekend!
