Cinco de Mayo #DailyOutfit

Happy Monday! Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Will you be celebrating with a mojito or eating yummy Mexican food this evening?! I’m very fond of Mexico, its people and its culture. I’ve had the opportunity to travel to Mexico on several occasions: I was able visit a bit of Mexico City but my favorite destinations thus far have been Puerto Escondido and Sayulita. Mexico too often gets a bad rap but I’ve only met wonderful people and had the best of times while traveling in this beautiful country. It’s where my love of surf developed and where I’ve met people I know call some of my best friends. So Happy Cinco de Mayo amigos mexicanos!

Today starts one of the busiest weeks of the year for me – the annual Canadian Music Week. I’ve been attending CMW every year since 2007, wearing different hats. This year I’ll be doing a bunch of live music sessions for the show I host BRBR as well as hosting a showcase on Thursday night at the Gladstone Hotel. All the deets can be found here. In addition, I look forward to seeing a handful of artists that are in town for the week. There are thousands of bands coming from around the world to Toronto this week. If you’re looking for some must-see acts, I’ve created a little playlist with the help of Deezer, with some of the acts that are worth checking out. You can listen to my playlist here.

Happy the sun is finally shining down on Toronto! Celebrating by not wearing any tights!! It’s a revolution!! Love this Forever 21 mesh and lace bohemian dress that Offner found for me last year in California. Since it’s not incredible warm yet, I’ve paired it up with a plaid buttoned up shirt to make the outfit a little warmer!

5 Questions With: Kim Churchill

0W9A4211

I first met Kim Churchill, I believe it was 5 years ago now (already!) during Canadian Music Week in March in Toronto at the Royal York Hotel. At the time, I was working for Indica Records doing marketing, publicity, artist development, etc. My boss had heard of Kim, the Aussie guitar prodigy and one-man-band who at the time was still in his teens. He was interested in potentially signing him, so I was asked to check out one of his shows during the festival. From the first time I saw him play, I was floored. What a voice, what a presence and energy and what a wonderful storyteller. I was lucky enough to be a part of the start of Kim’s career in Canada, spending time driving him to shows, helping him at festivals with interviews and so on. One of my favorite memories from working with Kim was kayaking with him and Elmo, his right-hand man at the time, before one of his shows at O’Soleil Bar in Lac St-Jean. Kim’s career has grown exponentially since, so I was really stoked to get to ask him a few questions about his upcoming third record and also about his second passion and one of mine – surfing!

1 – Your third effort Silence Win is out on April 1st, in a few words, how would you summarize this record and your recording experience in Ucluelet?

KIM: It was the first time I think I have really matured to the point of approaching it calmly. In the past I have had such a strong desire to succeed. Sometimes this could really inhibit me. Ucluelet definitely helped relax and find a calm place to let the music just out. The whole thing just unfolded with complete ease and joy. I think its so lovely when these things happen.

2 – What do you want people to feel as they’re listening to Silence Win?

KIM: Interesting question. I don’t know that I ever personally focus on what people will feel. I focus on correctly transferring my own emotions and humanity into the music and then leave it for each person’s individual interpretation. On a basic level, I hope they enjoy it and find a solace.

3 – How does surfing and music complement each other?

KIM: Well I think that surfing is a very exciting way of being physical. It also involved a lot of trust in yourself and the ocean. The ocean is a very dangerous beast and I it a great metaphor for life in general. It can throw you around, nearly drown you or sweep you into the unknown in seconds. It involves a fair bit of trust to put yourself at its mercy, but through surfing I find the ultimate joy that is worth the risk. I think often my music reflects this process.

4 – What has busking, surfing and traveling around the world taught you about yourself and life over the past couple of years?

KIM: Busking has been a wonderful teacher of humility. I continue to do it partly for that reason. It’s also funded all of my overseas touring in the beginning and was the best way to rehearse my material to a nice cross section of people. Travelling has really inspired me. It feeds my songwriting. I find works in a wonderful cyclical way, as playing those songs then allows me to travel. This is a brilliant process I am always grateful for.

5 – What is your most magical surf spot?

KIM: Ha, too many to think of really. There are so many incredible little secrets and places I have been moved by. Angourie in Australia holds a really strong place in my heart. Its where I have recorded a bunch of my material. Some parts of Mexico have been very kind to me also.

Thanks Kim! Wishing you the utmost success with this new record. Can’t wait to shred some waves with you one day in Australia. Cheers mate!

This Week’s Ear Candy

This week is a crazy week for music in Toronto with Canadian Music Week! It’s only fitting that this week’s ear candy features an all-Canadian line-up. Here are my favorite tracks and videos of the week!

Ain’t No Love is a four-piece electro-hip hop act from Montreal/Toronto. They’re at Canadian Music Week this week and if it weren’t for my work commitments, I can guarantee that I’d be at their show dancing. Absolutely love their track “Gone Already”. Definitely something special about it. Check them out here:

Diamond Rings stopped by the studio this week. Though his latest record Free Dimensional came out a little while ago, it’s still one of my favorites. His music is super uplifting, dancy and positive. I’m obsessed with his track “I’m Just Me”. I couldn’t be more stoked to be seeing him perform at the Sirius XM Indies tonight!

Got a new found appreciation for the Montreal rapper trio Loud x Lary x Ajust after seeing them perform last night at our showcase. I love their bilingual flow, clever lyrics and A-Justice’s rad beats. You should definitely keep them on your radar if their music speaks to you. Live, they can definitely make you dance! Respect.

Wishing you all a wonderful CMW weekend!!

Le French Tickler #DailyOutfit

What a night last night! The first BRBR x CMW showcase “Le French Tickler” was a huge success! I truly had the best time taping our special show in the afternoon as well as hosting the evening with Didier, from BRBR. Our CMW special show will be airing on April 1st at 8pm EST and will featuring performances, interviews and funny moments from our night last night. Yesterday, Claude Munson & The Storm Outside surprised Eight and a Half with a cover of their track “Go Ego”. Here’s a little excerpt of the performance, the full performance will be available on the web the week of April 1st:

Thanks to all the bands that played our showcase: Pandaléon, Claude Munson & The Storm Outside, Karim Ouellet, Peter Peter, Eight and a Half and Loud x Lary x Ajust. All put on stellar sets! I highly recommend checking them out, if you haven’t heard of them yet. Also, a big thank you to everyone who came out to the show. Hope to see you all next year!!

This Is What Rock N’ Roll Looks Like! #DailyOutfit

It’s with little sleep but much excitment that I start what will probably be the longest work day of my life… or at least of the last little while. After months of planning, the day has finally arrived! Tonight is the first ever Canadian Music Week BRBR showcase “Le French Tickler“. Starting at 8pm at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, some of our favorite Canadian artists will be showcasing tracks from their latest releases. On the bill, we’ve got Eight and a Half (ex-The Stills & Broken Social Scene), Peter Peter, Karim Ouellet, Pandaléon, Loud x Lary x Ajust and Claude Munson & The Storm Outside. I couldn’t be more excited to know that the showcase is almost all sold-out! There will be a few tickets at the door and some passes/wristbands will be accepted. More info about the evening here:

The entire show will be livestreamed on our facebook page, so if ever you can’t make it out to the show, you can watch it live starting at 8pm EST here.  We’ll also be taping a special BRBR show with the artists during the afternoon that will be airing on April 1st.

My anthem for today couldn’t be more fitting and is a great pump up track by Porcelain Black!

Last night, I had a blast at Day 3 of World MasterCard Fashion Week. I went to see two shows: Mackage and Joe Fresh.

I absolutely fell head over heels in love with the entire Mackage collection. The first look, as seen below floored me. I loved the mixed leather and fur biker jacket, the burgundy leather skirt and leather leggings paired with their amazing new line of handbags and rad platform heels. I loved the red wool plaid skirts and shorts, all of the leather jackets, the fur, the long trench coats with leather trim, the schoolgirl backpacks and the little leather biker gloves. To me, Mackage’s fall/winter 2013 collection was the perfect mix between class and rock n’ roll! I can absolutely see myself wearing every single piece of the collection, it’s totally my style. I couldn’t be more excited to have seen such an inspiring runway show. Definitely my favorite this year! Now, I need to start saving up, if I want to add the new collection to my wardrobe.

The second collection I saw was Joe Fresh‘s Fall/Winter 2013. The room was absolutely packed for the show, which started off with some lovely French indie/electro music. That definitely got my attention! Though I don’t own many Joe Fresh pieces, I’ve always respected the line for creating quality affordable and stylish pieces that can be paired up with just about anything. They’re perfect for basically any occasion. Last night’s collection, was all about black and white, shimery fabrics, biker jackets, studs and headscarves?! Yup, a handful of models were wearing headscarves over their short black bob wig. I can’t say I was a big fan of the headscarves but… My favorite items of the collection were the black and white biker jackets, the black faux fur jacket and all of the black skirts. I also loved hearing French music throughout the show. Also, not sure if it’s just me, but Joe Mimran‘s final wave at the end seemed so heartfelt. He really seems like a sweetheart! Overall, I definitely see myself adding a few of those pieces to my wardrobe.

Day 3 – WMCFW + CMW #DailyOutfit

Happy Wednesday! Busy busy day ahead for me!

Starting off the day with a chat with one of my favorite Toronto artists Diamond Rings, who’s coming by our studio for an interview and performance. I love his super uplifting and positive electro-pop sounds! Watch “I’m Just Me”, loves it! Wanted to make sure I had a killer outfit for him today, such a fan of his style!

Following that, I’m heading to York U, to talk to the students about our CMW showcase taking place tomorrow (Just found out the advance tickets are sold out, crazy!!) and our show BRBR. Rushing back to the station afterwards to produce a live session with Elephant Stone, a great rock act from Montreal who are showcasing at CMW tomorrow evening.

This evening, I’m heading back to the World MasterCard Fashion Week tent to see two super exciting runway shows: Mackage and Joe Fresh! Couldn’t be more stoked for these two collections. I’m a big fan of both!

So today’s outfit is a mix of chic, rock n’ roll and fashionable. Perfect for all of the day’s events. VERAMEAT, Luxe Craving, Rebel and Fuss, Flashbacks & Lionette jewelry are adding sparkles to my outfit!

Must-see music at CMF this year!

It’s that time of year again! It’s Canadian Music Fest! Several thousand artists are flocking to Toronto to play the city’s numerous venues for the next couple of nights, hoping they get discovered by a international festival booker, record label, agent, etc. I’ve had the chance to attend Canadian Music Fest since 2006, wearing different hats (label rep, a&r, publicist, host, etc.) and have always discovered great artists every year. With that many artists playing at the same time, it’s always difficult to arrange a schedule and a must-see list. So I figured, I’d give you guys a little help. Here are some must-see artists at this year’s CMF:

1- THE BALCONIES – The most promising up and coming rock/pop outfit from Toronto. Best vocals, stellar guitar shredding and all-around amazing performers. They’ll rock your socks off! If I wasn’t at my own showcase, I’d be there front row centre, singing and dancing!

Thursday March 21, 2013 @ 10:00PM
Lee’s Palace

2- PETER PETER – His sophomore effort Une version améliorée de la tristesse was in my top 3 albums of 2012. His record has been generating buzz not only across Canada but also in the states and internationally. Hope you’ll also fall in love with the electro-tinged sounds of this stellar songwriter!

Thursday March 21, 2013 @ 11:00PM

3- MISTEUR VALAIRE – Mega talented multi-instrumentalists from Montreal who will make you shake your tail feather!

Friday March 22, 2013 @ 8:00PM
Sneaky Dee’s

4- CHVRCHES – Outfit from Glasgow who are buzzing all around the world with their dream-pop tunes. Listen to “Recover” and you’ll be sold!

6- AIN’T NO LOVE – Love the electro hiphop sounds of the Montreal/Toronto quartet. Definitely something special about this act!

Thursday March 21, 2013 @ 12:50AM
Drake Underground

7- KARIM OUELLET – A talented multi-instrumentalist from Quebec City who fuses pop, rock, soul and funk in his songwriting. His second record Fox, topped the Canadian iTunes charts, surpassing even Celine Dion!

Day 2 – WMCFW + CMW #DailyOutfit

Today is Day 2 at World MasterCard Fashion Week and also at Canadian Music Week. I had a stellar day shooting BRBR yesterday at Le Dolci in Toronto. The wonderful owner Lisa, let us use her kitchen and baked us a lovely BRBR cake. Check it out!

After shooting the show, I rushed over to see my first ever Pink Tartan runway show.  The place was packed! The show started off with some bright colors, long flowy coats and 50s & 60s-inspired flower prints. I really loved the bold blues, purples and pinks. The show continued with some lovely fur coats: some even had mixed colors. There were also a few leopard pieces, a handful of black and white dresses and coats, shimmery fabrics and lot’s of fur collars. One of the items I loved most, were the long leather gloves that all the models were wearing to accompany the coats and dresses. My top piece was without a doubt the multi-colored long fur jacket.  Though I don’t usually wear real fur myself, I still really loved the overall look of this coat!  You can see a few pics from the show below. Apologies for the quality of these photos, they really don’t do the collection justice. Looking forward to more Pink Tartan runway shows!

I also had the chance to meet a handful of lovely Toronto fashion bloggers including one of my recent favorites: Dainty Girl. She looked stellar with her black and white dress and Myles Sexton custom spike headband!

Today, I’ll be spending part of my day at the Marriott shooting interviews for BRBR.  Really looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new people! I decided to go with a bold red jacket, black and white stripes and a few gold/brass accessories.

Let the madness begin! #DailyOutfit

Happy Monday everyone! Today is the start of one heck of a week for me! Not only is it Canadian Music Week, but it’s also World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto.  I’ve been attending Canadian Music Week since 2006 but this is only my second season attending Fashion Week in Toronto. I couldn’t be more excited to be splitting my time between two of my biggest passions: Music & Fashion.  Tonight, I’ll be heading to the Bustle and Pink Tartan runway shows before going to see Mackage and Joe Fresh later in the week. Also this week, I’ll be hitting up conferences at the Toronto Marriott for CMW as well as doing a bunch of interviews and live music sessions with artists.  Thursday, we’re taping a special BRBR show live from our showcase at The Gladstone Hotel.  There are still some tickets left, so if you’d like to attend or for more info, click here.  Friday, I’ll also be covering the INDIES for the show.  Basically, no rest until next week!

So to prepare for a crazy week, I got a super cute manicure yesterday in Liberty Village at X-Nail & Spa. They gave me an ombré blue and green shellac manicure that changes color like a mood ring depending on your temperature. I couldn’t be more stoked about how it turned out!

BRBR at CMW

I’m super excited to announce that my show and I will be putting on our first ever Canadian Music Week showcase on March 21st at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto.

I’ve been attending Canadian Music Week for 8 consecutive years now, it’s one of my favorite festivals because it officially kicks off the spring and summer touring and festival season.  For those of you who don’t know what Canadian Music Week is, it’s similar to Austin’s South By South West, but a little more tamed  organized and colder weather. Basically, it’s a week-long music festival where artists, industry folk and media gather together to attend panels and put on showcases all in order to promote up and coming talent.  Over the years, I’ve attended as a label rep, radio host, tv host, manager, etc. and each year I’ve met some amazing people and discovered great artists.  All of Toronto’s music venues and bars become locations for showcases in the evening and during the day the Royal York Hotel is transformed into the meeting point for everyone in attendance. All you have to do is sit down with your computer in the lobby and you’ll make tons of great new connections.

So for our first ever showcase with BRBR, we decided to showcase some of our favorite up and coming bilingual Canadian talent.

Peter Peter – a Montreal singer-songwriter who’s buzzing these days in the US and across Canada thanks for the first single off his sophomore effort, a single that reminds me a lot of M83’s “Midnight City”. Everyone knows I have a little sweet spot for him.  He definitely has big cross-over potential in the English market.  Keep an eye out for him!

Eight and a Half – some might call them a super group because this trio features ex-members of The Stills and Broken Social Scene.  Dave Hamelin and Liam O’Neill recently re-located from Montreal to Toronto to pursue their new musical project.  Their first release was one of my favorites last year. Check out the rad “Go Ego” here:

Karim Ouellet – one of the most talked about artists in Quebec right now. His second record “Fox” made it to the top of the charts, not bad for a young artist from Quebec City. I really respect what he does, he’s a great lyricist and talented multi-instrumentalist.  The track below “Amour” plays everywhere across Quebec these days!

Claude Munson & The Storm Outside – is my latest discovery! They’re a great folk-group from Ottawa. Claude Munson’s voice is absolutely charming. It’ll be my first time seeing them live but I couldn’t be more excited! Take a listen here:

Pandaléon – a trio of young guys from St-Bernadin, Ontario, who are currently working on their first full-length. They’re recording and producing everything themselves straight out of their garage, turned jam space.  Their mature songwriting has always impressed me! They don’t have an official video out yet but you can get a little sneak peek of their track “Taché” here:

So if you’re into discovering great Canadian artists, I highly recommend coming to check out our little showcase on March 21st. Yours truly will be hosting the event 🙂 If you’ve got a festival wristband or pass, you can get in for free. If not, tickets are available here: http://canadianmusicfest.com/tickets/ticket-details/?schedule_ID=88&band_ID=5755

For more info about the event, check out our facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/127547670755646/

Hope to see you there!
