Road to Nike Women’s 15k – Week 3

Week recap:

Rainy and cold week in Toronto but grateful to have so much support around me right now to keep me focused and running regardless of what mother nature throws at us. The week started with a rainy 5k with the #betterforit girls on Monday morning. I also did two NTC workouts on Tuesday night and Thursday morning. They’ve become a good break for me during the week, while still allowing me to be active. Wednesday night, I ran the fastest 5k in my life thus far and accomplished a new PB (personal best, as they call them in the running world)! I took the day off on Friday and kicked off the weekend strong with my second ever 15k run on Saturday morning. I didn’t think I would run that distance again before the race but I really outdid myself yesterday. Not only did I beat my fastest 5k time, I also clocked my fastest 10k and 15k time. It’s so awesome to see progression!

How I’m feeling:

I’m so hungry all the time! I’ve seen an increase in my appetite since I’ve been working out 6 days a week. Not going to lie, some days I’ve been tempted to eat more sweets, but I’ve tried my hardest to eat organic, natural and healthy all the time. I was also a little fatigued this week. I noticed that I was falling asleep super early every night and also incredibly tired after yesterday’s 15k. My only issue so far: bruised toenails. Sounds gross I know… A little scary but hopefully they’ll get better soon!

What I learned:

-this week I learned a whole lot on nutrition thanks to holistic nutritionist Miranda Malisani‘s presentation at NRC on Wednesday night. She gave us a great presentation on pre & post-run snacks as well as nutrition tips for meals & hydration in the weeks leading up to the 15k as well as healthy food recipe ideas. I loved her post-run meal suggestions: vegetable quinoa, wild rice spaghetti with kale & goat cheese as well as these super yummy looking banana date buckwheat pancakes below. She also had a handful of snack suggestions such as homemade chia seed pudding, spirulina parfait, smoothies, etc. I was happy to see that most of what I’ve been eating thus far on this training journey has been good for me but it’s always great to get extra tips & inspiration for meals & snacks. A big thanks to Miranda for the amazing goodie bag she gifted us, stoked to try out these natural health products!

-running with a group or a buddy has really the best way to push myself. Though I’ve been doing a lot of training on my own, I’ve realized these past two weeks that my fastest times and longest distances have come from running with others. Though I ran most of the winter by myself, joining the NRC crew was a game changer. They really motivated me to get out each Wednesday even when it was cold out. Now that the temperatures are getting warmer and that the NRC is offering different types of running training every night of the week (get more info here), it’s a great way to pick up speed or distance. This past week, I ran my fastest 5k thanks to an amazing pacer and ran another 15k thanks to Offner!

Another busy week of training up ahead! I’m very excited because this Tuesday, I get to train and interview members of the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team as part of my journey towards the race. Stay tuned for a recap of this special training day and also a #5QuestionsWith interview with one of the players coming on the blog next week!

5 Questions With: Abeille Gélinas

Emilie Iggiotti

Every Saturday morning as a teenager, I would religiously watch a program on MusiquePlus called “La Ruche” that a really amazing VJ called Abeille Gélinas would host. I guess I was immediately drawn to Abeille because she had red hair, always had the coolest on-camera style and seemed like the friendliest person. Plus, she got to interview some of my favorite bands! I was super bummed when she left the station to pursue new adventures. For a few years, I lost sight of what she was doing but two or so years ago, I saw her name pop up as the DJ of an event I was attending. Not only has Abeille continued to work as a tv host and reporter, she’s now one of the most in-demand female DJs in the country. She also currently works as a contributing writer for several publications and in the midst of all that, finds time to get married and travel the world. She is always smiley, is always working on a ton of new project and has the most positive and best attitude about life. Abeille is definitely one of my inspirations! Hope you will enjoy my 5 Questions With Abeille Gélinas:

1) Can you talk to us about your style evolution from your teens until now? How would you describe your style today?

As a teenager I tried pretty much everything. I had a skater look, a Dee-light (the singer) look and a hip hop phase. I was and still am inspired by culture a lot. I like following my personality, breaking the rules and mixing it up. I guess I associate with a free-spirited bohemian look!

2) Who are your style icons?

I love the way M.I.A mixes colours and patterns. I admire the way Zooey Deschanel is sophisticated yet she doesn’t have to show much skin to be sexy. And the Olsen twins are just the best! I adore them because they refuse to be defined by fashion norms and they are constantly being creative, times 2!

3) You started your career as a VJ at MusiquePlus but you are now a DJ. Can you talk to us about your career transition and why you decided to become a DJ?

I always loved music and after all the ups and downs of being an actress and host, I wanted to find a career that I could control. The idea of being a DJ was like a fantasy to me, so I asked a friend to show me the basics of the art, practiced for a month in my kitchen non-stop and my DJ passion and style was born.

4) What are some of your most memorable moments thus far as a DJ?

It’s difficult to pick one because it’s not about the size of the event, it’s the energy that I get back from the crowd that makes the whole difference. Playing for Canada Day on Parliament Hill last year in front of 20,000 people was amazing! Sharing the stage with artists that I respect is awesome, but I also can honestly say that I’ve had some memorable and intimate nights with 100 people.

5) For those who don’t know, you’re someone who likes to travel a lot. You were just recently in South Africa. What is it about travel that you love so much?

I get amazed with life quite easily! Standing in front of a view that I’ve never seen before, feeling a different type of breeze on my skin, connecting with people you’ve just met… Perhaps when I’m in Montreal I don’t find as much time to meditate on those things because of work. When I’m away, there’s only the present moment and the adventures ahead of me that count.

Blue & Yellow #DailyOutfit

Getting ready for the Festival d’été de Québec today. Really excited to attend the festival for a 7th year in a row! The FEQ is without a doubt one of the best organized and raddest festivals to attend in North America! Crossing my fingers for good weather because we have so much stuff to shoot for BRBR while in Quebec City! Keep an eye out for interviews and performances as well as new segments with – The Balconies, The Hunters, Xavier Caféïne, Ponctuation, Doldrums, Austra & more! We’re also organizing a rad “after-party” on July 7th. I’ll post up all the deets shortly but here’s what you need to know:

WHO: BRBR x I. Found

WHAT: 1 band + 2 DJ sets FREE! Beers, Skate Ramp & More!

WHEN: July 7th – 10pm

WHERE: Quebec City, Qc

Rare color combination for today’s daily outfit. I decided to challenge myself today and wear some clothes that I don’t usually wear much. I find that it’s a good exercise to do once in a while, to see if you still like to wear some of your clothes or if it’s time to donate them! Feeling like a mermaid with this shinny blue skirt… I think today’s outfit was most likely influenced by the doc I watched on Dolphins last night 😉 *nerd*
