World MasterCard Fashion Week has once again come to a close! Another week filled with inspiring runway looks and fashion discoveries. What were some of your favorite collections this season? Who was your favorite designer discovery?
Some highlights for me this season: Mackage‘s fringe jackets and beautiful cut out skirts. Helder Diego‘s cape dress and structured print jacket. Hayley Elsaesser‘s bold and fun prints, loved the colors and the snake theme, very southwestern! Narces‘ flirty flowery lace dress and lip dress. Rudsak‘s sexy dark winter looks for men. So much awesomeness on the runway!
This week has been absolute madness for me. I just got back from NYC on Monday and headed straight into World MasterCard Fashion Week. I decided to go a little more mellow on the shows this year, having been to almost all the shows these past couple of seasons. Though Fashion Week is incredibly inspiring, fun and a great networking opportunity, it’s also incredibly tiring. So this season, I picked and chose the shows I most wanted to attend – Mackage, Hayley Elsaesser, Narces, etc. Catch my recap of some of my favorite moments of World MasterCard Fashion Week this weekend on the blog! Also coming this weekend!! Don’t miss my #5QuestionsWith Hayley Elsaesser!
Yesterday NYFW came to a close after 8 days of runway shows and events at the Lincoln Center and all across Manhattan. I hope you’ve enjoyed my favorite look posts throughout the week. I’ve created a special Pinterest board with all of my favorite looks from this season. Check it out here. Here are my favorite looks from Day 8 at NYFW. My favorite collection of the day: J Mendel!
I first saw Klaxon Howl last fall in the studio room. An interesting structure greeted the show guests last night. The men strolled around the structure with as per usual much swagger. What I love about Klaxon Howl is that the collections and models are always so effortlessly cool. All types of hats, shades, wool blazers and suits, pants, overalls, suede jackets and jackets with leather detailing, could be seen during the presentation. A lot of the pieces had a very 30s prohibition era feel to them. Overall, a collection very representative of the hip urban men in Toronto. My favorite suit of the night is the first look below!
It was my first time being able to catch G-SUS on the runway. The first so far this season to include a live music act. Though the performance wasn’t flawless, it added a cool vibe to the show. I can’t say that I absolutely loved every single piece on tonight’s runway but the things that stood out the most were definitely the men’s knit sweaters, the printed leggings, bold prints as well as that standout pink bomber jacket. I also loved the models’ looks with the dark black smokey eye and plum lipstick. Very grunge!
Always love seeing the sophisticated designs from Pink Tartan‘s creator Kimberley Newport-Mimran. I especially loved last night’s collection because it had a darker twist to it. Some notable pieces – red houndstooth pants, all of the fur coats, plaid coats, the oversized furry gloves and clutches, the shimmery black blazers and coats and the long dresses. I like that she used a more rock n’ roll palette this time, opting for black, white and red, for most of her pieces, which is a little tougher than usual. The standout item – furry pants! See the last picture below. Honestly, a brilliant collection!
I was beyond thrilled to have been selected by Joe Fresh as one of their #VirtualFrontRow bloggers for the show last night. As part of this experience, I was able to share some exclusive content on my social media networks pre and post-show about Joe Fresh’s #JoeFreshFW14 collection. Make sure you go check my Twitter & Instagram pages @melsays to check it out! In Sochi, Canada’s slogan was #WeAreWinter, I therefore only found it fitting for Joe Mimran‘s FW14 collection to represent the great (& cold!) Canadian outdoors. Many collections often present clothes that are beautiful but not as practical for winter but Mimran’s latest offering presented practical, affordable & beautiful winter pieces. For the occasion, we were offered a rad black Joe Fresh toque along with information on the collection. On the runway last night we saw lot’s of chunky knits, oversized jackets, parkas, furry toques, graphic sweaters, side lace waxed jeans and lot’s of fur pieces. The color palette went from earthy tones to Joe’s signature orange. Some of my favorite pieces of the show were: the green biker jacket, the furry oversized camel coat and those green tartan trousers. After the show, everyone was also talking about the models’ side braids, they were definitely a hit! As per usual, the models walked down the runway to a super fun and energetic soundtrack. I think that what I love most about attending a Joe Fresh runway show is that everyone is always in the best of moods, dancing around, the models seem to be having fun and also Joe Mimran always seems so happy! Props to Joe Mimran and his team for another fun presentation! You guys hit it out of the ballpark again!
Ah yes!! The perfect way to end my week at WMCFW. Leather, fur & so many dreamy pieces. Over the past couple of seasons, I’ve definitely become a HUGE Mackage fan. I was thrilled to be greeted by a seat with my own name on it, way to make a girl feel special! I loved their runway set up with colorful leaves representing the fall. The show started with some beautiful fuchsia coats with black leather detailing for both ben and women. I loved that the models were sporting some Frends headphones. We then feasted our eyes on quilted bomber jackets and skirts, fur hats, fuzzy camo bomber jackets, fur shorts and skirts, leather pants for men & women as well as tartan from head to toe. Then, all of a sudden, two men dressed in leather onesies came to the runway to sweep away the leaves and make room for the “snow” for their winter portion of the presentation, clever! They presented a handful of warmer coats with fur detailing and a bunch of rad jackets. I also loved their variety of handbags, clutches and backpacks for men and women. Honestly, too many dreamy looks to choose from. I absolutely loved it all without exception! You can witness the beauty of the show below!

Thank you to all the designers and organizers for an amazing and incredibly inspiring week of fashion! Can’t wait to see what next season has in store!!
For my third FW14 WMCFW outfit, I decided to put the emphasis on a bright colored coat. I picked this amazing green coat from Zara to compliment my red hair. I think anyone can pull this look off. Zara had a handful of other colored jackets like fuchsia, brightyellow, neon blue, etc. I think wearing a bright colored coat automatically spices up your outfit!
Here I am after three full days of shows, a little tired to say the least! Had such a blast again this evening! Can’t believe it’s over for this season. Check for my full Day 3 recap coming tomorrow am! Night!! xo
I kicked my night off with the promising Toronto designer Thomas Balint. It’s always a pleasure to see men’s collections. I find it very refreshing and it can also be very inspiring. Balint’s designs tonight did just that. He presented a plethora of structured jackets, textured shirts, high collars, velvet jackets and shirts. All items were chic yet at the same time very casual and wearable every day. The man Thomas Balint dresses is one that likes fashion with an edge but that also wants comfort. I particularly liked his cropped pants as well as the use of one very androgynous female model. I also liked his choice soundtrack, opting for some Franco acts including Lescop and My Sister Klaus. All in all, simply put, men dressed in Balint threads will be hot. Can’t wait to get @offnerin some of these!
Next up was New York designer Laura Siegel. She started her show with a touching video on women jewelry makers in Africa and a discussion on how she’d like people who buy clothes to directly be connected with their artisans. I quite frankly didn’t know all that much about Laura’s designs before the show started but I was completely drawn in with her vintage, candle-lit living room set up. I liked the laid back vibe she had going on, which was definitely reflected in her creations. Every model sported a beautiful black bohemian hat that accompanied all of their oversized or loose fitting garments. Laura presented earthy tones, rich dark camo greens, retro imprimés, long knitted scarves, oversized knitted sweaters and dresses, wrap dresses and probably my top piece of the collection – the oversized long belted coat. Who doesn’t love big oversized items in their wardrobe when fall rolls around? Great choice of boots and also thoroughly enjoyed hearing some Lykke Li play during the show. Well done Laura! I’m a new fan!
It was my first time attending a Mercedez Benz Start Up show and let me tell you, the room was PACKED! When you entered the show room, two models were standing on small podiums, lit by a dim blue light with eerie music playing in the background. A perfect mood setter for the first of two shows. The first designer, Matière Noire aka Cécile Raizonville, originally from the south of France, now calls Montreal home. She definitely had a very dark aura around her clothes. Though I wasn’t 100% sold on all of her creations, the pieces that did speak to me were her knit sweaters, the equestrian-inspired caps, the moon sweater and sweater dress as well as her electric blue coat and black coat.

I was happy to also see Malorie Urbanovitch present her collection, which to me represented comfort and warmth. She definitely had a 50s school girl look going with the long knit pleated plaid skirts and knee high socks. I enjoyed all of her fuzzy dresses and long fuzzy coats. She presented a great combination of knits and different fabrics, going from suede to viscose. I thought her earthy and neutral color palette was very soothing. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the collection.
The Montrealer has definitely made herself known in the past year or so. The first collection that I saw from Mélissa hadn’t really resonated with me, but this particular collection definitely did. She had a brilliant color palette that she stuck to throughout – black, gold and egg white, with a few nuances and prints. I like that she opted for large triangular shaped prints, switching from black to egg white. All of her sweaters, dresses and pants looked incredibly comfortable and cozy. She had great textured shimmery items, quilted fabrics and near the end even threw in a pop of mint green. I personally wasn’t a fan of the soundtrack but the amazing designs definitely made up for it. I sincerely feel that Mélissa has really grown as a designer, presenting original clothes for a sophisticated yet edgy woman.
It was extremely to just pick a few but here are some of my favorite looks… I absolutely adore the first and last look!
Finally, I saw David Dixon’s show entitled “White Label”, his bridal wear debut for Kleinfeld Hudson’s Bay. The show room was well over capacity, everyone crouching to catch a glimpse of his presentation video on love. The message was: “Love never fails”, which I thought was super endearing! The show started with a few white dresses followed by light peach and pink tones. I liked his modern take on these contemporary wedding, gala and cocktail gowns. Lot’s of ruffles and BIG and bold sparkly jewels. The collection transpired freedom and joy. My favorite piece was hands down the bridal lace pant with bustier and blouse combination, a great alternative for those not wanting to wear dresses on their special day. The show ended on a perfect note – David walked down the runway as the theme song from the film My Best Friend’s Wedding – “I Say A Little Prayer For You” played.

Another inspiring night at the tents! Check back tomorrow for my recap of Day 3!
Last night World MasterCard Fashion Week Fall Winter 2014 officially kicked off in Toronto. I’m beyond thrilled to be attending a handful of shows again this season. Here’s my Day 1 recap from the shows I saw yesterday evening.
Vawk is a luxury ready-to-wear label designed and hand crafted in Canada by Sunny Fong. I had heard a whole lot about this label the past few seasons but had never had the opportunity to attend a show. So tonight was my Vawk baptism.
The show last night was all about black everything but with a touch of silver, shimmer and grey! The collection had the perfect combination of elegance and badass. Though dark and a little “gothic”, this collection can definitely be worn by all types of women. I loved all the long flowing gowns with cutouts and sheer layers. I loved seeing lot’s of black of sequins, open backs and leather. My favorite piece of the collection was the black leather biker jacket with the textured silver sleeves. I can definitely see myself wearing that killer jacket with any one of those dresses!
I loved the variety of girls he picked for the runway especially the inclusion of his older model with an artsy prosthetic leg. Props to him for showing diversity.
It was so nice to see the designer Sunny Fong run down the runway with a huge smile at the end of the show. He seemed to have had as much of a good time as we had.
Finally, if you’re a fan of Sunny’s designs and want to help him out, he’s currently running an IndieGoGo campaign to help cover the costs of his runway show yesterday in addition to starting an online shop and expanding the brand internationally. For more info, go here. Here are some of my favorite looks:
I had first seen this Canadian womenswear and jewelry brand’s runway show last season and had been absolutely in awe. Designers Chloé and Parris Gordon‘s looks totally appeal to me. I also love that they use the beautiful and so talented Langley Fox as one of their models for their site. Last night’s runway show left me feeling the same way! Every stylish hipster in Toronto was in the room to witness their inspiring FW2014 collection. The show started with a few red pieces – leather pants, textured jackets, long sleeved dresses followed by some sharp red imprimés. The old school hip hop musical background was perfect for this 90s inspired show. I loved that the show went from some super girly skirts and dresses to more tough and edgy detailed pants and structured jackets accompanied by adorned baseball caps. I really appreciated their mix of tailored and flowing pieces. Great jewelry as usual!
One thing that I love most about these girls is their consistency. Though there is evident growth in their designs, their signature look can definitely be seen, which is something that will surely please their fans. All in all, a super wearable collection. I would personally wear the entire collection! Here are some of my favorite pieces:

I unfortunately had to miss Sid Neigum‘s runway show later in the evening but I’ve seen lot’s of great feedback post-show all over social media.
Don’t you think? Today started off a little cold but it’s definitely FINALLY starting to look a little like spring… Won’t get my hopes up just yet though!!
Can’t believe World MasterCard Fashion Week is upon us again! I’m thrilled to be attending tons of fashion shows this season! Though my Fashion Week will once again be cut short due to some travel plans, I’m beyond excited to be there for a couple of days. After much thinking and planning, I’ve finally got all of my outfits figured out. Can’t wait to show you all! If you’re going to Fashion Week in Toronto, who’s show are you most looking forward to?
Today’s outfit – patterned right x casual black jersey dress x my Anine Bing boots!
A busy night at the tents for me last night! I’m really happy I was able to catch almost all the runway shows.
My night started off with a refreshing show by Klaxon Howl. It was nice to see a lot of music folks in the crowd for the show. I loved their “mise en scène” for the presentation of their collection. The park bench, lamppost and bicycle were all nice details. I rarely get to see a mens only line, so it was a nice change. The models were either clean shaven or had big beards (so trendy right now!) and a variety of hairstyles. I really appreciated all of Matt Robinson’s dress shirts: the colors he chose, the prints and the fabrics. I think he has a very modern take on workwear. I was happy to hear that all of his lines are made locally and by hand, which is something that I really respect. All in all, his designs represent to me the quintessential urban guy, the one who wants to dress with an edge but also be fashionable.
My night continued with a showing from Maison Matthew Gallagher. I loved his opening show projection – a dreamy beach! Right away I was transported into the warmth of summer. The show started off with beautiful white dresses with sheer and light fabrics. I really liked that he incorporated light prints underneath the white on certain designs. My favorite pieces came a little later on in the show, I loved the colored crop tops and fitted long skirts. I credit him for using an interesting mix of fabrics. All of the designs he presented were very feminin and suit the models really well. I liked that they didn’t overpower his designs too much with lot’s of jewelry and accessories. Promising for someone in his late 20s!
I had really been awaiting the third runway show last night: Mackage! As I’ve mentioned before, their FW13 show last season had been my favorite. Right from the beginning of their 15-minute presentation, I was in full lust mode! I particularly liked their choice of earthy colors that were so well coordinated with either shorts or skirts, simple black pumps and their stellar line of bags. I really liked their idea of adding metallic belts and neck pieces as accessories (um hello gold runway!!). Their jackets are as stunning as ever and seemed very lightweight. I loved this season’s combination trenches and also all the effortlessly cool pieces they had created for men (who said ready-to-wear and comfortable pieces couldn’t be hot!). Their crop tops and sheer tops were awesome. Props to Mackage for making bold coral orange jackets, skirts and bags. My hat goes off to these two designers again… What a sexy line! I would wear every piece in the collection! Now I better start saving up, SS14 is right around the corner!
To finish off the night, I headed to the most crowded show of the week: Joe Fresh. It’s always nice seeing so many people show up for his presentation. Elisha Cuthbert, Jake Gold, Kreesha Turner, Jian Gomeshi, were amongst the many local “celebrities” in attendance for the show last night. Props to Joe Mimran and his team for continually picking a killer soundtrack. Last night’s show tunes included Grimes, You Say Party and Britney‘s new track “Work B**ch”. I kept bobbing my head throughout the entire show! I was delighted to see a lot of navy blue and white pieces come down the runway (I need to start wearing more navy, I know it goes really well with red hair ;)), followed by some bright orange and red pieces (a reoccurring color for the ss14!), blue snakeskin, blue camo and a few black and white looks. My favorite look was the red faux leather pants and shimmery v-neck tee. The animal print clutches also caught my eye. It’s hard not to feel excited about a Joe Fresh line because it’s accessible, affordable and always contains some really fun pieces.
All in all, a memorable night at the tents! What were your highlights from last night’s shows? Who are you excited to see tonight and the rest of the week? I sadly won’t be able to go to more WMCFW shows this season due to work commitments but I spent two very inspiring nights at the David Peacaut Square again this season!
Last night I had the pleasure of surprising one of my best friends – Jacquie in Hamilton for her birthday. Not only is she a truly wonderful human being and friend, she’s also an incredibly talented artist and inspiration. Her band The Balconies are taking over the world. They’re the whole package. Not only can they write killer catchy songs, their live set is tight and explosive, they have the right attitude and are some of the nicest people in the biz. Mark my words, with their upcoming release Fast Motions, this band will be big! The band will be doing an album release show THISFriday October 25th live in Toronto. If you are like me and can’t make it out, you’ll be able to stream their entire set online via BRBR at 10pm EST right here. Don’t miss it! Happy Birthday again Jacquie!!
Today is day 3 of World MasterCard Fashion Week. A bunch of shows are on the menu for this evening including Klaxon Howl, Maison Matthew Gallagher, Mackage and Joe Fresh. Who are you looking forward to seeing? Last season, Mackage had been my favorite show so I can’t wait to see their SS14 collection tonight. Check back here tomorrow for a full review of my evening!
My love for all things leopard print will be on display this evening. I adore my stunning new Zara TRF furry leopard coat. So happy I added it to my closet, it’s the perfect coat for the season. I’m also wearing my favorite hat from Topshop and my Anine Bing boots. Ready for yet another inspiring night of fashion! See you tonight?!
PS. Can’t help but hear this song play in my head while I’m walking around with this outfit today… LOL
