Band T-Shirt #DailyOutfit

The long weekend is just around the corner!! And the countdown to my next big trip is fast approaching. Europe in T-2 weeks! I’m so excited!

I can’t wait to share with you all my next 5 Questions With interview on Sunday. I’ve got another amazingly talented lady that I’ll be profiling. Make sure you check the blog on Sunday to see who it is! I’ll give you a clue: Vancouver!

Last night, I was lucky to attend the HAÏM concert in Toronto at the Kool Haus. I’ve been a big HAÏM fan ever since their first couple of singles, before any official EPs had come out. One of my friends in LA had introduced me to them during one of my many trips. I was right away drawn to their infectious mix of pop and rock! Every time I wanted to see them live, I just missed them by a day or so. Yesterday, they finally came to Toronto. Though there aren’t too many bands left on my “To-see list“, they were definitely one of them. Last night, they absolutely SLAYED the Kool Haus. I’ve seen them perform on a whole bunch of television shows, livestream concerts, etc. and always thought they gave a good show (though lately, I had seen a few more so-so performances) but last night, they went above and beyond my expectations. Anyone who’s ever doubted their musical chops, their ability to sing, etc. was silenced at the show. My ears are still slightly ringing and my voice is pretty shot today from all the singing I did last night but man was it worth it. Wow! One of the best shows I’ve seen in a while!

Over the years, I’ve amassed a ton of band shirts either via work, friends, etc. Though I have given most of them away now, I’ve kept a few that are more meaningful to me. When getting dressed this morning, and still on a high from last night, I figured it’d be fitting to plan my outfit around a band t-shirt. I happened to find this old Phantogram tee (one of the bands I personally can’t wait to see live again!!) I got when I was working with the band at Indica Records. I paired that with my rad new Modern Vice White Handler boots, some rock n’ roll Springsioux jewelry and my off-white moto jacket. Voilà!

5 Questions With: Kim Churchill

0W9A4211

I first met Kim Churchill, I believe it was 5 years ago now (already!) during Canadian Music Week in March in Toronto at the Royal York Hotel. At the time, I was working for Indica Records doing marketing, publicity, artist development, etc. My boss had heard of Kim, the Aussie guitar prodigy and one-man-band who at the time was still in his teens. He was interested in potentially signing him, so I was asked to check out one of his shows during the festival. From the first time I saw him play, I was floored. What a voice, what a presence and energy and what a wonderful storyteller. I was lucky enough to be a part of the start of Kim’s career in Canada, spending time driving him to shows, helping him at festivals with interviews and so on. One of my favorite memories from working with Kim was kayaking with him and Elmo, his right-hand man at the time, before one of his shows at O’Soleil Bar in Lac St-Jean. Kim’s career has grown exponentially since, so I was really stoked to get to ask him a few questions about his upcoming third record and also about his second passion and one of mine – surfing!

1 – Your third effort Silence Win is out on April 1st, in a few words, how would you summarize this record and your recording experience in Ucluelet?

KIM: It was the first time I think I have really matured to the point of approaching it calmly. In the past I have had such a strong desire to succeed. Sometimes this could really inhibit me. Ucluelet definitely helped relax and find a calm place to let the music just out. The whole thing just unfolded with complete ease and joy. I think its so lovely when these things happen.

2 – What do you want people to feel as they’re listening to Silence Win?

KIM: Interesting question. I don’t know that I ever personally focus on what people will feel. I focus on correctly transferring my own emotions and humanity into the music and then leave it for each person’s individual interpretation. On a basic level, I hope they enjoy it and find a solace.

3 – How does surfing and music complement each other?

KIM: Well I think that surfing is a very exciting way of being physical. It also involved a lot of trust in yourself and the ocean. The ocean is a very dangerous beast and I it a great metaphor for life in general. It can throw you around, nearly drown you or sweep you into the unknown in seconds. It involves a fair bit of trust to put yourself at its mercy, but through surfing I find the ultimate joy that is worth the risk. I think often my music reflects this process.

4 – What has busking, surfing and traveling around the world taught you about yourself and life over the past couple of years?

KIM: Busking has been a wonderful teacher of humility. I continue to do it partly for that reason. It’s also funded all of my overseas touring in the beginning and was the best way to rehearse my material to a nice cross section of people. Travelling has really inspired me. It feeds my songwriting. I find works in a wonderful cyclical way, as playing those songs then allows me to travel. This is a brilliant process I am always grateful for.

5 – What is your most magical surf spot?

KIM: Ha, too many to think of really. There are so many incredible little secrets and places I have been moved by. Angourie in Australia holds a really strong place in my heart. Its where I have recorded a bunch of my material. Some parts of Mexico have been very kind to me also.

Thanks Kim! Wishing you the utmost success with this new record. Can’t wait to shred some waves with you one day in Australia. Cheers mate!

Leopard is the New Black #DailyOutfit

Happy Friday everyone! Have you guys been taking advantage of all the Black Friday sales going on right now?

I had the best evening yesterday at Body Blitz Spa yesterday with my friend Jacquie. She and I went to enjoy their different pools and steam rooms as well as a nice aromatherapy massage. I love that they’re located right downtown and that they’re a women-only facility. They also had a yummy juice, smoothie and tea bar. The entire staff was delightful. I had such a relaxation evening! I highly recommend checking them out if you’re looking for the best in spa care. Felt so zen after!

Happy Wednesday!

Today started off with exciting news from my favorite Canadian airline Porter Airlines. Those who know me, know just how much I rave about this airline. I’ve been flying with Porter ever since they started in 2006. I would come to Toronto from Montreal for work when I was at Indica Records and would always travel with Porter. I love its convenience, great customer service, attention to detail, sandwich boxes, etc.  Today they’ve made a huge annoucement regarding new destinations and a new fleet of planes. They’ll now be flying to Los Angeles, Vancouver, Calgary, Miami and Orlando. They’ll also be receiving 30 new CS100 Bombardier planes, thus becoming the first Canadian airline to use these aircrafts. If all goes according to plan, the first planes will be taking flight in 2016! For more information on their future plans, go here. I couldn’t be more exciting for Porter Airlines! Stoked to be flying Porter all the way to my second home, Los Angeles 🙂

Last night, I finally received my rad 10th Tribe limited edition Doll beanie that I had ordered during their 10 hour sale. I first heard of 10th Tribe through instagram, the lovely Danielle Bernstein from We Wore What always wears her Doll beanie.  The 10th Tribe was created by a group of friends in Manhattan who designed effortless and clean-cut clothing that they wanted to wear. The 10th Tribe design beanies, tees, tanks & more! I recommend checking out their website to see what they’re all about and to find out when their next 10 hour sale of exclusive products for their followers will take place.

For today’s outfit, I’m proudly repping the 10th Tribe with my new limited edition Doll beanie, leather pants, leopard shirt, denim jacket and dreamy armcandy from Lionette & Biko 🙂

Polka dot & leather #DailyOutfit

It’s Friday and the sun is shining, life is good! I couldn’t be more excited to be heading to the Horseshoe tonight to see Half Moon Run. I had the chance to work with them at the very beginning of their career while I was still working at Indica Records. As predicted, they’ve really blown up in the past couple of months. They’re about to embark on a European tour with Mumford & Sons and following that they’ll be touring the US with Of Monsters And Men. Mark my words, this band will be huge!

It’s dress Friday! Love the mix of polka dots and leather. Stoked to be wearing my new Luxe Craving leather cuff and Lionette bracelet.
