5 Questions With: RUDYBOIS

I first heard of designer RUDYBOIS almost two years ago now, when I was looking for a dress for the red carpet of the Quebec music awards, the ADISQ gala. He had reached out through twitter, expressing interest in lending me a dress for the special night. Since then, he’s become my go-to designer whenever I need dresses for events whether it’s the Juno Awards, Gemini Awards, etc. The young Quebec City prodigy designs high-end womenswear that is elegant but with a unique edge. All of his pieces are handmade in Canada using fabrics from around the world. His creations can be found in select stores in Canada and also online on his new shop. His latest collection is called Silence and has been making waves around the country. I know this is only the beginning for this talented young man. Here are my 5 Questions with RUDYBOIS:

1) Can you talk to us about your own style evolution from your teens until now? How would you describe your style today? (you can provide us with photos if you’d like)

It’s almost painful for me to go back to my teenage days! I was obese and definitely looking for myself. My style was a mix of Avril Lavigne and Billie Joe! (Osiris skater shoes, with a lot of studs bracelets, blue-black dyed hair, an eyebrow piercing, skulls everywhere and black everything) Later in high school, I became the ancestor of the “douchebag movement” (bleached hair with lighter undertones, white everything (blazer, formal shoes, belt and even the famous surfer shell necklace), mixed with bright colours!) When I say I was looking for myself… Then I moved to Quebec City and discovered the menswear designers section at Simons, this was a revelation to me, for my personal style as well as for my future career. That’s where I learned that less is more!

I now describe my personal style as an antithesis, I love being all dandy and dressed up as well as being a little artsy kind of hipster with an old rock influence, maybe that’s why my favorite brand, that also suits me perfectly, is Neil Barrett. There’s also a lot of things that I would love to wear that I can’t simply because I could not assume it, I still have a lot of body acceptance work to do!

2) Who are your style icons?

I really dig Nick Wooster and Jared Leto styles ( even if back in the day, Leto was wearing silver Crocs!)

3) Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?

I really love sketching outside, I have my spot where I create all of my spring/summer looks. For the cold seasons, I can’t obviously create outside so I just need to isolate myself, I often go to the library.

4) Who would you like to see wear your collections?

Even if her style is not always refined, I would really love to see Madonna wearing my designs, or Lady Gaga and Celine Dion who are always well dressed.

5) What are some of your favorite artists or bands? Do you listen to music when you create?

I do listen music! From when I wake up, until the end of the afternoon, I listen music all the time!  I love a lot of different kinds of music, recently I’ve discovered Songza and it makes me discover so many new artists! My playlists of the moment includes: HBO Girls : Marnie  (featuring Oh Land, Robin, SLL, Graffiti6), 90’s dance hit ( I’m a big fan of 90’s dance music) and Blogged 50 (featuring Trails and Ways, Phil Beaudreau, Cherub). I also have my classics like Madonna’s American Life album, her best I think.

Thanks so much Rudy! Wishing you continued success!

5 Questions With: Hannah Georgas

I first met the fiery redhead Hannah Georgas not too long after I moved to Toronto. At the time, I was working for AUX TV and had the pleasure of chatting with her just before the release of her first full-length record. I right away felt a connection with this fierce woman. She’s an incredible songwriter and always writes the most touching lyrics. In the past couple of years, she’s gone on to tour around the world, play countless festivals, receive Juno nominations, etc. She will be heading to the UK in May to play a series of dates including The Great Escape festival before doing a round of festivals across Canada this summer. She always has the cutest dresses on stages and a really fun style, so I’m thrilled she took some time off of writing new material to answer a few of my questions. Here are my 5 Questions With: Hannah Georgas.

1) Can you talk to us about your style evolution from your teens until now? How would you describe your style today?

I grew up living under the same roof with my three sisters who were all into style and fashion.  They had very strong opinions about what they liked and didn’t like.  I was a bit of an outcast or at least I felt that way..  I enjoyed keeping things fairly simple and casual.  I remember getting into the flare on my pants (size of flare varied over the years) in high school and bought a lot of my jeans from a place called Jean Machine at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, Ontario.

My style has evolved over the years and I no longer sport anymore body piercings.  I was almost kicked out of the house for getting my eye brow pierced (my poor mum).  Little did she know I had my nipple pierced at one point..ouch!

I think for the most part though ‘everyday Hannah’ has remained fairly consistent.

I really enjoy finding vintage pieces.  I started getting into vintage shopping when I moved out West and was attending university.  I think my budget had a lot to do with it at the time and then I started finding cool dresses for stage wear and other musical endeavours.  Everyday life and performance life are two really different things in my mind.  I have a lot of fun dressing up for shows and I love the idea of having something visually appealing for the audience.  I enjoy transforming and showing a different side of me on stage.

2) Who are your style icons?

These are artists that I adore and draw a lot of visual inspiration from..

MIA, Fiona Apple, David Bowie, Tim Burton, Chan Marshall from Cat Power, Peaches

3) How do you pick out your clothes for tour and stage? What are your tour must-haves?

I like to put together and prepare pieces/dresses that I’m excited about before I head out on the road.  I always make sure I bring the right undergarments (bodysuits, nude bras, underwear) for certain pieces I have.  Performance shoes are a big thing for me too and having the right ones for a specific outfit.

4) Who are some of your favourite designers and/or brands?

Treana Peake is a designer from Vancouver and has a line called Obakki.  I have been wearing a lot of her pieces the past while.  I love her work and she’s an inspiration to me.  Her designs are beautiful, comfortable and elegant.

5) What makes you feel good/confident as an artist and performer?

Feeling comfortable in my skin is my number one thing.  Keeping myself healthy and fresh is also very important to me too.  I get a little fussy about my hair situation pre show and so a good hair day always makes me happy.  Walking off stage and feeling like I gave it my all makes me a happy camper.

Thanks so much for your time Hannah!

I first found out about her through one of my friend’s instagram feed a little while ago. It was love at first sight!! I fell in love with her designs immediately! I think Corrine’s creations are original, edgy, creative and chic! I love how she combines metals, precious stones, vintage and new and how every piece is absolutely stunning!

I was lucky to be able to wear some items from her upcoming FW2013 collection to this year’s Juno Awards (here’s what I wore) and at several events I’ve been hosting for BRBR this winter and spring. She’s my go-to designer when it comes times to pick out jewellery for my events!!

Pre-LA crunch time! #DailyOutfit

It was an early day at work for me today! After an almost sleepless night (damn you stupid nightmare!!), I headed to work super early today to prepare my last edit before leaving for LA tomorrow. It’s the last piece left over from all the stuff we had shot in Regina last month at the Juno Awards. I’m happy it’s all done because my post-trip schedule is looking pretty hectic!

Below is one of the great performances we did while in Regina. This one is with the pop-rock outfit High Hopes from Saskatoon. Though it’s not really my kind of music, I was really impressed by their vocal melodies!

Today, I also headed out to Polson Pier to shoot an interview with the Fransaskois artist Anique Granger. I always love going to that area of the city because we get such a beautiful view of the Toronto islands and downtown. Toronto was looking really lovely today! I feel lucky to be able to live in such a vibrant and amazing city 🙂

For today’s outfit, I’m wearing color, prints and some brass jewelry. I love my Corrida necklace, it’s so badass! For some reason, this necklace makes me think of Spain. I’ve always wanted to travel to Barcelona. It’s definitely on my list of places to go to one day!

Shades of Green #DailyOutfit

Happy Tuesday!

Was at work ridiculously early this morning to start editing the last batch of stuff we filmed in Regina at the Juno Awards.

Last night I watched the cutest and most touching documentary called Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey. Like most, I grew up watching Sesame Street. Growing up with a French mother, it was important for her that I watched television in English. Every morning as a child, I would watch Mr. Dressup followed by Sesame Street. Elmo was definitely one of my favorite puppets because he was so cute and loveable. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, the doc tells the story of Kevin Clash, who grew up in Baltimore making puppets, performing for children in his neighborhood and never letting go of his dream of meeting Jim Henson and working on Sesame Street. It’s available on Netflix for anyone interested in watching it. Smiles guaranteed!

For today’s outfit, I’m wearing diferent shades of green, not only in my clothes but also in my accessories. I LOVE my new Uranium Lois Lane green stone necklace from their Spring/Summer 2013 collection and my new green Biko Jewellery chainmaille bracelet. I also love my new TOPSHOP Henry Holland Suspender tights that my bf got me yesterday. Perfect weather to wear them today!

Wednesday edits #DailyOutfit

Happy Wednesday!

Hope all is well! Was at work ridiculously early this morning to get started on my Juno red carpet story that I’m editing today for next Monday’s show. Though we’ve already posted a little teaser from the red carpet on Sunday night, I’ll be putting together a story featuring some of my favorite moments from Sunday night. The whole thing will be airing next Monday April 29th at 8pm EST on TFO across Canada and online at http://tfo.org.

Today’s outfit featuring a rad custom denim buttoned up shirt that was re-cut and patched that I got in Vancouver last summer. It’s a one-of-a-kind piece. I love the thunderbird design on the patch. I’ve paired that with a plain white tee, my green pants and Pamela Love x Nine West boots. I’m also wearing my thunderbird silver bangle, Lionette bracelet and a few other silver sparkles.

To start off the day the right way, check out Rennes, France‘s Juveniles band. They’ve just released a groovy new track called “Fantasy” that was produced by Yuksek. It came out on Monday. Listen here:

Back from Regina #DailyOutfit

Hey everyone!

Hope your week’s off to a good start! Apologies for the lack of updates last week, it was absolute madness in Regina. I just flew back late last night and was already at work early today to shoot BRBR episode 29 today. Can’t believe it’s already the before last show of the season! Time flies!! I had the best time in Regina this past week. Though there was still tons of snow on the ground, it was nice to be back there. The one thing that really stood out from my trip, was just HOW NICE everyone in Regina was! Wow! It’s so refreshing and nice to see people be so kind, helpful and smiley to everyone. I definitely really appreciated everyone’s warm welcome. We also met some really great local artists from Saskatchewan like High Hopes, Fly Points, Pimpton, Young Benjamins, etc. We also spent time shooting some new pilots for next year such as a Taxi show and a cooking show! Oh yea!!

I also took up a pretty interesting challenge last Friday when I hosted a 30min livestream in English and French live from the Juno Awards’ opening cocktail and welcome reception. I was really lucky to have some of this year’s Juno nominees who joined me for the livestream including Bahamas, The Pack a.d., Miranda from Great Lake Swimmers (yea ginger!) and the lovely Hannah Georgas. The 30min livestream was such a rush!! Looking forward to another similar challenge in the future!

Saturday and Sunday’s galas were also tons of fun! It was great to see a lot of my media and industry friends as well as some bands that I really respect and love. Though she didn’t end up taking home any awards, Hannah Georgas put on a killer performance during the big gala on Sunday night. I really hope this will open up even more doors for her in the future. It was also wonderful seeing Hey Ocean! walk down the red carpet for the first time, so proud of how far they’ve come!!

Below you’ll find the brief recap we put up from Sunday’s big gala red carpet. A big thank you to RUDYBOIS and Biko Jewellery for letting me wear their lovely designs this weekend! I’ll be putting together a special report on the Junos’ red carpet tomorrow that will be airing next Monday April 29th at 8pm EST. Make sure you keep an eye out for it! Here are a few pics from the Juno weekend!

Regina travels #DailyOutfit

Happy Thursday!

Yesterday I traveled to Regina for the Juno Awards. Apologies for not being able to post anything on the blog.

It’s been a while since I last traveled to Regina. The only time I’ve ever been to Regina was in 2006 while I was on tour so it was nice to get re-acquainted with the city today. It was definitely a lot colder and snowier than Toronto but the one thing I noticed right away was everyone’s friendliness! We didn’t have much time to explore the city but we had a lot of fun getting props (see the pic below) for the sessions and interviews we’ll be doing this week while there. We gave Dollarama a whole lot of money today!

On the schedule for today, going to get our sound gear that made it a day later and then start doing interviews and performances with two Saskatchewan acts: Pimpton and Fly Points.

So excited for our live hit happening this Friday live from The Juno Awards welcome reception! Make sure you tune in at 7pm CST/9pm EST to see what musical guests and nominees I’ll be speaking to.  You can tune in live right here: http://facebook.com/brbrtfo

For the occasion, I got some neat gold and black nails done at Sparks Nail Salon in Toronto. I had heard that the place did some rad 3D Japanese nail art so figured it’d be the perfect opportunity to check it out. I didn’t want something to crazy but wanted something classy and that could go well with my RUDYBOIS dresses & my Biko Jewellery.

Yesterday, I opted for comfort on the plane and went with a comfy skirt, chambray shirt and sweatshirt. One thing I’ve learned through frequent travels is how cold it can get on a plane, so the more layers the better!

Have a lovely day!!

Madness Tuesday #DailyOutfit

Hey everyone! Hope your day’s going well! Today is absolute madness as we’re getting ready to leave for the Juno Awards tomorrow morning! There are so many things to prepare before we head to Regina. I can honestly say that I didn’t put as much effort as I usually do in my outfit this morning… I opted for comfort with distressed jeans, a plaid shirt and my comfy wedge sneakers!

Keep checking the blog this week to get the full scoop on the Juno Awards. I’ll also be doing a live hit from the Juno Awards‘ Welcome Reception with a bunch of nominees this Friday at 7pm CST / 9pm EST. For all the deets, check here. We’ll be broadcasting live from BRBR’s facebook page: http://facebook.com/brbrtfo.

Wishing you all a lovely afternoon!
