#MakeYourMove with GapFit in NYC

dav

Last week I was invited to fly to New York City to check out the brand new Spring/Summer 2017 GapFit collection. The brand teamed up with celebrity trainer Jonny Roxx and celebrity choreographer Tanisha Scott for a special morning celebration that was designed to make us sweat in their latest gear.

dav

We met up at the recently opened Rumble, a boxing-inspired group fitness studio in Flatiron district to preview some pieces from their collections, which included the new GapFit Sculpt, a range of compression shorts and tights designed for high intensity workouts. And high intensity, is what we got that morning! Everyone had the opportunity to try items from their line that was created for both men and women with optimal style, technical innovation and comfort in mind.

The morning started off with a powerful boxing workout followed by some super fun choreography with Tanisha Scott and we capped it off by doing a full-body conditioning workout with Jonny Roxx.

The two Toronto natives are such great ambassadors for GapFit‘s new collection. The pair met on tour with Drake and hit if off immediately, both working in tandem to shape Drake‘s body and stage presence. What’s great about their collaboration with the brand is that they brought in some of their expertise to create a unique workout and dance moves for GapFit.

Both have worked with some of the top stars in the business. Jonny has trained clients like Brandon Jennings of the Washington Wizards, Amir Johnson of the Boston Celtics and Drake. Whereas Tanisha has worked with the likes of Rihanna, Beyoncé, Drake, Jay Z and Alicia Keys, just to name a few.

Jonny and Tanisha are beyond thrilled to be able to collaborate with the brand on this new collection.

Gap is such a reputable brand. I try my best to align myself with the best. I was excited, when I was approached with the opportunity to work with them. They’re one of the best,” says Roxx. “Gap is the OG classic with great structure and amazing quality clothing that I can pair with anything,” adds Scott.

As for what they look for when choosing activewear, Roxx explains “I look for clothes that are breathable and comfortable. I also look for clothes that do well with sweat and that look great on me in the gym and outside of the gym. I look for clothes that make it easy for me to move. Gapfit is the total package.” As for Scott, she’s looks for three key things, “comfort, functionality and style.”

For this specific collection, GapFit created some ingenious elements, such as Breathe fabric and Aero Mesh. The clothes work not only in a fitness studio or for a run but also after a workout, so you can hit the streets confidently after your sweat session.

After the fun workout last week, we were served some tasty snacks and got to chat with both Tanisha and Jonny. I was excited to be a part of such a special launch and left New York City excited to incorporate the new GapFit collection into my active lifestyle!

5 Questions With: Mackage

GP2_8906[1]

For the past couple of years, I’ve had the opportunity to attend Toronto Fashion Week. Each season, the show that always leaves me the most inspired is the one presented by Mackage. Designers Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan launched Mackage in 1999 and have since become one of the most popular outerwear brands in North America and one of my personal favorites. In preview of their upcoming FW16 show at TFW on Wednesday, I got to ask the designers a few questions about their upcoming collection and journey thus far.

1) What was your main inspiration behind the FW16 collection? If you could resume the collection in one word, what would it be?

ELISA: We can resume the collection in two words: WINTER WARRIOR!
It is important for us that you remain fashionable while staying warm. The FW16 collection is inspired by a fashion-forward urban metropolis overrun by a severe cold front.

2) What are some of the new avenues in design and craftsmanship you wanted to explore this season?

ERAN: We are always committed to excellence and improving our product season after season. We explore new techniques and design, while always staying true to our roots. This season, we are introducing a new fill power of 800. This results in even better warmth to weight ratio.

3) What you say is the biggest difference with the FW15 collection?

ERAN: We are evolving as a brand in everything we do. In addition to developing new techniques and silhouettes this season, we are also injecting new trends into our collection. Some of the biggest statements this season are coloured fur and oversized collars. This is something that we will see throughout our FW16 collection.

4) I’ve read that you both love traveling, what are some of the most inspiring places you’ve travelled to and why?

ELISA: Italy! There is something so breathtaking about every city and the culture. It exudes history and there is something very beautifully nostalgic about it. Not only is the fashion in Italy untouchable, but also their art and décor as well. The energy there is so different and exhilarating! We always come back inspired from our trip to Italy.

5) What’s next for Mackage in 2016?

ELISA: We have a lot of surprises lined up! We are excited to reveal some exciting projects this year. There is more to come… Stay tuned! 😉

5 Food Discoveries in New York City

IMG_5683

I recently went back to one of my favorite cities – Manhattan! The food culture in NYC is just exquisite so I took it upon myself to check out a bunch of new restaurants while I was in town. Here are 5 places you need to check out on your next trip to NYC!

1) The Butcher’s Daughter – This healthy juice bar and cafe is the best spot for brunch/lunch or just an afternoon snack. This super hype cafe is always packed so don’t be surprised if you have to wait in line just to get a crammed seat in the place. That said, it’ll be well worth your wait. They make everything fresh in-house and offer a delicious selection of juices, soups, salads, sandwiches and more. I went for the avocado toast, which was to-die for! All of their juices are also incredibly well balanced and everything on the menu looked very tasty. The service is super quick so if you’re starving by the time you get a table, at least they’ll get your food served fast. They also have a super cute small patio out front, which is perfect for people watching!

2) Tartinery – Located in Nolita (they also have two other locations in the city), this little taste of French heaven is the perfect place for dinner. They have the real deal French onion soup, tartines (basically an open faced toast with your choice of delicious toppings – see menu below for examples) and also the legit French recipe for the classic Tarte Tatin, making you feel like you’re in a Parisian or Lyonnais bistro if you just close your eyes for a few seconds. Don’t be surprised if you hear people speaking French while you’re in this joint, it’s a go-to spot amongst French ex-pats.

3) Narcissa – Located in the East Village and in The Standard Hotel, this restaurant is the home of André Balazs and Michelin-starred chef John Fraser. This farm to table approach features only seasonal, local and organic produce. They cook California style and everything is clean and light yet without ever compromising flavour. It’s higher price point is completely justifiable as all the dishes we had were succulent! My favorite items on the menu: the original carrot fries and the homemade potato gnocchi.

4) Little Cupcake Bakeshop – Hands down the yummiest place for cupcakes in the city. Everything they make features only fresh and sustainable ingredients, predominantly sourced from local farms in the area. Additionally, all their baking is done in small batches on-site. They don’t add any shortening or preservatives in their cakes and the milk products they use come from grass fed cows, so you can eat these guilt-free! The peanut butter & jelly cupcake and also larger cake immediately caught my eye. It was exceptionally moist, flavorful and delightful! I dream of going back to the bake shop, just to get another one of their cupcakes!!

5) The Breslin – I’m a big fan of the Ace Hotel. I’ve been to the Ace Hotel’s restaurant in LA before and had the most delicious meal so I had been meaning to try The Breslin after hanging out in their hotel for a couple of days. Their brunch menu is simple but contains some brunch staples with a Breslin twist. I had a freshly made green juice accompanied by a frittata. It seems like their burger is also a very popular item to order on the menu. Their breakfast items are also delicious, their scones and granola are must-haves! Looking forward to going back to taste more items off their menu. (apologies for the less than stellar photo, it’s almost impossible to photograph in this dimly lit restaurant!)

October 1st

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

Pinch me! I can’t believe it’s already October! Things I love about October: the leaves changing colours, the crisp smell of fall, being able to wear pants again, bringing my collection of teas back out, etc! Another thing about October is that it’s BREAST CANCER AWARENESS month. Breast cancer is a cause that touches me directly, my mother is a breast cancer survivor. Unfortunately, a lot of her friends who were also diagnosed around the same time as her, have passed away. We’ve come such a long way in regards to treatment but we still have so much further to go. There are so many great initiatives and campaigns out there to raise funds for breast cancer. I particularly liked this unique campaign I saw today by Surfline x Mauli Ola Foundation called “Battle For The Breasts”, which gets you to vote for your favorite women surfers. You can check it out here. For more information on Breast Cancer Awareness month, you can check out the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation or your local Breast Cancer organization.

Enjoying the last few days of warm weather this year to wear my shorts a couple more times. Wearing a long sleeve shirt today just to make the outfit a little warmer.

Swings

I may have turned 29, 30 recently, but I still feel like a kid at heart. There’s nothing I love more than being silly, goofing off, playing around and being mesmerized or fascinated by new things. I wonder if I’ll ever grow out of it… but then again, maybe I shouldn’t. These past couple of days, I’ve been having so much fun walking around my city, exploring new places in Toronto and taking photos. It’s become a fun ritual for Offner and I and goes above and beyond taking photos of clothes.

Speaking of never growing out of something, I don’t think I’ll ever grow out or grow tired of wearing leopard print. Only time will tell I guess… But I particularly like these pants that I got a little while ago because they are a more subtle version of leopard print.

NYFW Spring ’15 – Day 5

Day 5 at NYFW! My discovery of the day: Rosetta Getty. Not only did I love the entire collection, I also loved the way the looks where put together and where the collection was shot. I think the location and style of the photography complement her creations incredibly well.

NYFW Spring ’15 – Day 3 & 4

Busy weekend over in New York City at NYFW. Crushing hard on the new Mara Hoffman collection. I love her take on the bohemian style, her bright colors and imprimés! New discovery for me this wekend: Zoë Jordan! Love how each outfit was styled, the color pallet she used and the cuts of each garment. I also really loved all of the shoes and boots that Victoria Beckham chose for her collection. Drooling over those leopard print pointed toe boots!

5 Questions With: Lyndsey Butler of VEDA

-1

Leather jackets, have become a staple in everyone’s closet. A must-have item for rock n’ rollers at heart, fashionistas and everyone in between. Today, the leather jacket is worn all year round and can be found in different shapes, styles, colors, etc. VEDA, is a NYC brand that was founded by the ultra talented Lyndsey Butler. Their specialty: the perfect leather jacket. Lyndsey and her team will be celebrating this September, the one year anniversary of their flagship store in SoHo and are already hard at work on their upcoming Spring/Summer 2015 collection that will feature bold colors and prints, a new avenue for the brand. VEDA also has plans to go beyond their leather roots as they continue to expand the brand. VEDA recently partnered up with another amazing NYC designer Pamela Love to create a unique line of dreamy biker jackets. I had the chance to stop by the store in SoHo was I was in NYC to check them out, I could have bought every single item!! If you have yet to discover VEDA, I hope that this interview with the brand’s founder will make you want to check it out. Here are my 5 Questions with Lyndsey Butler of VEDA:

1) What made you want to become a designer? When did you start your career?

I just wanted to make things I wanted to wear, but that I couldn’t find anywhere else.
I started VEDA in 2008.

2) Who are your fashion icons?

My mom, Georgia O’Keeffe, Cher Horowitz, John Waters, Phoebe Philo, Debbie Harry, Nico, David Lynch, Kinky Friedman.

3) Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?

Everywhere. Living and working in New York City is a huge source of inspiration; the people, the culture and the energy. I also get a lot of inspiration from movies, books, art and travel. As a designer I am constantly absorbing (everything) and then drawing on my personal experiences to create.

4) The leather jacket is a classic piece and a wardrobe staple. What in your opinion makes a good leather jacket?

The most important components are the leather quality and the fit. For me personally, the perfect leather jacket is made from a soft lightweight leather and the fit is slimming but not fitted.

5) A lot of badass babes have been seen sporting VEDA designs. What have been some career highlights thus far?

Oh that’s a fun question… It is always cool and exciting to see who ends up in one of out pieces. Recently, we have had a lot of funny women wearing VEDA, like Gillian Jacobs, Nasim Pedrad, and Abby Elliott, and that couldn’t make me happier. Last season, Kate Bosworth wore one of our jackets and that was great because she is known for her great style.

Prismatic World Tour

I’ve been waiting for tonight since Valentine’s Day! Tonight is Katy Perry‘s World Prismatic Tour debut in Toronto! I was so stoked when I received tickets as a gift from @offner in Miami back in February. I’ve always loved Katy Perry’s magical and colorful universe. I can’t wait to see all the costumes and set tonight! Ready to get my dancing on!!

Happy Weekend everyone!!
