5 Food Discoveries in New York City

IMG_5683

I recently went back to one of my favorite cities – Manhattan! The food culture in NYC is just exquisite so I took it upon myself to check out a bunch of new restaurants while I was in town. Here are 5 places you need to check out on your next trip to NYC!

1) The Butcher’s Daughter – This healthy juice bar and cafe is the best spot for brunch/lunch or just an afternoon snack. This super hype cafe is always packed so don’t be surprised if you have to wait in line just to get a crammed seat in the place. That said, it’ll be well worth your wait. They make everything fresh in-house and offer a delicious selection of juices, soups, salads, sandwiches and more. I went for the avocado toast, which was to-die for! All of their juices are also incredibly well balanced and everything on the menu looked very tasty. The service is super quick so if you’re starving by the time you get a table, at least they’ll get your food served fast. They also have a super cute small patio out front, which is perfect for people watching!

2) Tartinery – Located in Nolita (they also have two other locations in the city), this little taste of French heaven is the perfect place for dinner. They have the real deal French onion soup, tartines (basically an open faced toast with your choice of delicious toppings – see menu below for examples) and also the legit French recipe for the classic Tarte Tatin, making you feel like you’re in a Parisian or Lyonnais bistro if you just close your eyes for a few seconds. Don’t be surprised if you hear people speaking French while you’re in this joint, it’s a go-to spot amongst French ex-pats.

3) Narcissa – Located in the East Village and in The Standard Hotel, this restaurant is the home of André Balazs and Michelin-starred chef John Fraser. This farm to table approach features only seasonal, local and organic produce. They cook California style and everything is clean and light yet without ever compromising flavour. It’s higher price point is completely justifiable as all the dishes we had were succulent! My favorite items on the menu: the original carrot fries and the homemade potato gnocchi.

4) Little Cupcake Bakeshop – Hands down the yummiest place for cupcakes in the city. Everything they make features only fresh and sustainable ingredients, predominantly sourced from local farms in the area. Additionally, all their baking is done in small batches on-site. They don’t add any shortening or preservatives in their cakes and the milk products they use come from grass fed cows, so you can eat these guilt-free! The peanut butter & jelly cupcake and also larger cake immediately caught my eye. It was exceptionally moist, flavorful and delightful! I dream of going back to the bake shop, just to get another one of their cupcakes!!

5) The Breslin – I’m a big fan of the Ace Hotel. I’ve been to the Ace Hotel’s restaurant in LA before and had the most delicious meal so I had been meaning to try The Breslin after hanging out in their hotel for a couple of days. Their brunch menu is simple but contains some brunch staples with a Breslin twist. I had a freshly made green juice accompanied by a frittata. It seems like their burger is also a very popular item to order on the menu. Their breakfast items are also delicious, their scones and granola are must-haves! Looking forward to going back to taste more items off their menu. (apologies for the less than stellar photo, it’s almost impossible to photograph in this dimly lit restaurant!)

5 Food Discoveries in New York City

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Looking for new spots to check out next time you travel to New York City? I’ve got you covered! In such a big food city like NYC it’s hard to only pick five, but here are some of my latest favorites!

1) Chalk Point Kitchen. One of the newest restaurants that I discovered upon my last trip to NYC. I was immediately attracted to this place for two main reasons a) they’re all about supporting the local farming and food community and b) they’re very social media savvy! I was welcomed with a super cute personalized card on the table. I loved their farm and barn-inspired interior. Everything that we ordered tasted incredibly yummy and FRESH! They also have lot’s of amazing vegetarian options. You can pay them a visit for brunch and dinner, they’re located in Lower Manhattan. Make sure you also check out their ultra cool bar just underneath them called The Handy Liquor Bar, love the old library and speakeasy vibe they’ve got going on.

2) Doughnut Plant. If you’re a doughnut fanatic like I am, you have to stop by the Doughnut Plant in NYC. There are two main locations on the island: one close to the Williamsburg bridge entrance and another in Chelsea. Whatever area you’re staying in, it’s definitely worth the trek to get these handcrafted gourmet doughnuts. They make their doughnuts every day from fresh seasonal fruits and ingredients (organic if possible), they’re all natural, all of their jams are made in-house plus they don’t contain any eggs, trans fats, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. You’ll want to try their signature Jelly-Filled Square Doughnut, I had their peanut butter and jelly doughnut and it was hands down the best doughnut I’ve ever tasted (and I’m starting to be quite the doughnut pro)! If you’re on the go, you can always download their app, so that you are sure to find a doughnut near you!

3) Le Pain Quotidien. My favorite spot for breakfast, brunch or lunch when in the city. I love their seasonal and organic menu. This place has such a European feel to it, with the big communal tables, their jams, pastries, etc. It’s really homey spot that makes your dining experience really fun and relaxed. I’m a huge fan of their avocado on toast for lunch, their quiches and fresh salads. For breakfast, I love having their organic granola (they also have a Gluten Free option for those in need) as well as their chia seed pudding! The portions are the perfect size so you’re never left feeling too stuffed!

4) Baked by Melissa. By far the cutest cupcake place in NYC. Melissa’s little cupcake shops are located all around Manhattan. I stopped by the one right by Central Park and Columbus Circle. She opened up her first shop in Soho in 2009. In her store you’ll find more than a dozen different kinds of bite-size cupcakes. I decided to try a box of three, my favorite being the peanut butter & jelly (are you noticing a theme yet on this blog? I have a thing for pb&j!).

5) The Grill at La Piscine / SNOB. Located in the heart of Chelsea, this summer rooftop pool and restaurant or winter lounge will give you one of the best views of Manhattan. In the summer, they have an amazing outdoor grill where they serve Mediterranean specialties and in the winter, you can relax in their comfy sofas and dreamy lit lounge. Located in the Hotel Americano, this is one of my new favorite hotspots to hang out in. A perfect place for drinks after work or weekend outing!

5 Questions With: Sarah Barthel of Phantogram

Phantogram_F_7537

A few years ago, while I was working at Indica Records, my boss at the time dropped an EP on my desk and wanted me to tell him what I thought. He had been sent an EP from a band in Saratoga Springs, NY called Phantogram. After my first listen, I was right away drawn to their unique blend of dark cinematic electro pop and the singer’s dreamy voice. I had the chance to go see them live not long after and immediately knew the band was poised for greatness! I was incredibly lucky to work with the band at the beginning of their career in Canada. Not only are Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter incredibly talented, they’re also some of the nicest people in the biz. Fast forward a few years later, with the release of their second full length Voices, Phantogram is now headlining every big festival, selling out venues around the world, playing on all radio formats and taking the world by storm! I couldn’t be prouder of what these guys have accomplished over the past couple of years! One thing that I noticed since I started following the band, is that Sarah always has the best style on and off stage. She always has the coolest moto jackets, leather pants and accessories. Sarah and the rest of Phantogram will be keeping busy this summer playing festivals across North America and Europe. Make sure you go see them live if you haven’t already, they will blow your mind! I beyond thrilled to present to you this week, my 5 Questions with Sarah Barthel of Phantogram:

1) Who were some of your role models or people you looked up to growing up?

David Bowie
Prince
Mariah Carey
Whitney Houston
Aaliyah
James Brown

2) Can you talk to us about your style evolution from your teens until now? How would you describe your style today?

I spent a lot of time at Salvation Army as a teen looking for old t shirts and jackets. Usually went for classic jeans and chucks.
I tended to dress like a Tom boy growing up. I always wanted to pierce my face somewhere but was too much of a pussy to do that so I ended up piercing the hell out of my ears haha. I always loved keeping a classic look and dressing it up with accessories. I still think that way now. I’ve definitely evolved my footwear by graduating to heels from chucks but I like to keep my look simple with dark colors and dressing up my look with a cool leather jacket and heels with some cool jewels.

3) Has the band’s increase in popularity influenced or changed your personal style? If so, could you tell us how?

Yes definitely. I love the opportunities I get when brands or designers want to dress me. I never got those opportunities before because we weren’t a recognized. Now people want me to wear their clothes so I get to have fun with my style

4) How do you pick out your clothes for tour and stage? What are your tour must-haves?

I usually like a few different looks for a tour. I definitely like to walk out of stage with a cool looking jacket with intentions to take it off after a few songs.
Must haves: heels that aren’t too scary to run around in!
Bold gold jewelry
Hair straightener
Dry shampoo

5) Who are some of your favorite designers and/or brands?

All Saints leather
Jeffrey Campbell
J brand
Jeremy Scott
St Laurent
Modern vice
Kill City
Oak

Wishing you continued success! Thanks Sarah!

So stoked on the new black combat boots I received from Nasty Gal last night! I’m a big fan of the brand and its’ founder Sophia Amoruso. Talk about a lady who’s a go-getter and who knows exactly what she wants!

Excited to pair my new boots with one of my favorite lace dresses, my new earring cuff and some printed tights!

Today’s epic track is a brand new tune from Phantogram called “Bill Murray”. Voices comes out Feb 18th!

Purply #DailyOutfit

Happy Monday everyone!

Delighted that there are only two Mondays left (including today!!) before I leave for France! So excited! I’m also really happy to be going to a special Porter Airlines event this evening. I’m a proud supPorter of Porter’s expansion plans. The local airline has been key in not only my career development but also in keeping family and friends close over the past couple of years.

For the event, I’ve dressed up in this cute bodycon purply dress that I got last season at H&M. It’s probably the comfiest dress you could ever own plus it also keeps me warm with its long sleeves. I’m not a big purple fan but I find that this color suits my red locks pretty well.

Fresh Friday #DailyOutfit

So excited about the upcoming weekend! One of my childhood best friends that lives in NYC will be coming to Toronto for the weekend. Can’t wait to hit up some great restaurants, go for a lakeside run and catch up!

For today’s outfit, I went back to my Friday dress wearing tradition! I dressed down a simple black jersey dress with a sleeveless jean jacket and my rad Camo Jetts from Modern Vice.

Beanie’s Back #DailyOutfit

Snow may not have hit Toronto yet but it’s definitely beanie weather again. I found this super cute knit beanie at H&M the other night and thought it’d be the perfect addition to my growing beanie collection. I used to think I looked silly with a beanie on but it’s definitely grown on me! Do you like beanies? Do you think it’s just a fad?

Speaking of H&M, how exciting is the new Isabel Marant x H&M collection that will be out on November 14th? Everyone’s been talking about it for the last couple of weeks. I saw tons of photos from the official launch in Paris last week and a bunch from the H&M collection preview last night in Toronto. Here are some of my fav looks from their ad campaign… These looks will be flying off the shelves in no time, mark my words!
