WMCFW SS15 Day 1 Recap

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

Yesterday World MasterCard Fashion Week officially kicked off in Toronto. Designers are in town this week to present their Spring/Summer 2015 collections. Each day this week, I’ll be recapping some of my favorite looks from the runway and highlights from the event.

My second season seeing this young prodigy. Last night’s collection included a balance between relaxed and loose fitting garments and some more structured ones. I loved his mix of minimalist yet classy dresses, jackets and shorts. He also presented some interesting fabric cutouts and kept the colors to black, white and silver. Sid Neigum is definitely a ballsy and confident designer and I have much respect for him because of that. Here were my favorite runway looks.

Pink Tartan has been one of my favorites each season. The show started off with some beautiful black and fringe bathing suits. Last night, Kimberly Newport-Mimran showed us her go-to classic black and white color combination but also incorporated some very psychedelic prints in her ss15 collection. I loved the flared pants, bohemian style blouses, high waisted pants and jumpsuits that all went perfectly with the 70s psychedelic rock JFB & Iron Buttlerfly soundtrack. Love the pieces below!

So great to see one of my favorite designers Beaufille present this evening at the Mercedes-Benz Start Up runway show. I was happy to see a few pieces from their new collection specifically selected for the contest. I am a fan of the white cutout dresses, the black and white prints, the wine colored leather pieces and that amazing backpack! I always leave the show wanting to own every single piece.

Eliza Faulkner‘s denim style dresses, crop tops, blue and white pallet, big hoop earrings and headscarves, totally reminded me of the beach and summer. The last look she presented, as seen below, was me highlight of the show.

Blak. I is a name that I was unfamiliar with until last night. I enjoyed the blue, black and white color combination as well as his black and white pieces. I liked the fact that he also introduced a bit of leather on the runway. The long flowy bohemian style dress, seen below, that he paired with a beautifully crafted leather jacket was my favorite look of the show.

Vaiken‘s presentation didn’t inspire me as much as the others, though I did like the white tank and short combo and beaded fringe details on his dresses.

Lastly, we watched Laura Siegel present some new designs for ss15. I had seen her collection last season and had been blown away. I love the earthy, bohemian and edgy woman that she presents each time. I loved that she incorporated a lot of headwraps, silver bangles and arm cuffs to accompany her loose fitting but still incredibly flattering pieces. There was definitely a tribal feel to her presentation last night.

A big congrats to Sid Neigum who took home the Mercedes-Benz Start Up award last night. So well deserved!

Stay tuned for my coverage of Day 2 at WMCFW coming tomorrow!

WMCFW FW14 Day 3 Recap

A rainy but warmer night at the tents last night! Another 5 back to back shows to check out. Here’s my recap:

I first saw Klaxon Howl last fall in the studio room. An interesting structure greeted the show guests last night. The men strolled around the structure with as per usual much swagger. What I love about Klaxon Howl is that the collections and models are always so effortlessly cool. All types of hats, shades, wool blazers and suits, pants, overalls, suede jackets and jackets with leather detailing, could be seen during the presentation. A lot of the pieces had a very 30s prohibition era feel to them. Overall, a collection very representative of the hip urban men in Toronto. My favorite suit of the night is the first look below!

It was my first time being able to catch G-SUS on the runway. The first so far this season to include a live music act. Though the performance wasn’t flawless, it added a cool vibe to the show. I can’t say that I absolutely loved every single piece on tonight’s runway but the things that stood out the most were definitely the men’s knit sweaters, the printed leggings, bold prints as well as that standout pink bomber jacket. I also loved the models’ looks with the dark black smokey eye and plum lipstick. Very grunge!

Always love seeing the sophisticated designs from Pink Tartan‘s creator Kimberley Newport-Mimran. I especially loved last night’s collection because it had a darker twist to it. Some notable pieces – red houndstooth pants, all of the fur coats, plaid coats, the oversized furry gloves and clutches, the shimmery black blazers and coats and the long dresses. I like that she used a more rock n’ roll palette this time, opting for black, white and red, for most of her pieces, which is a little tougher than usual. The standout item – furry pants! See the last picture below. Honestly, a brilliant collection!

I was beyond thrilled to have been selected by Joe Fresh as one of their #VirtualFrontRow bloggers for the show last night. As part of this experience, I was able to share some exclusive content on my social media networks pre and post-show about Joe Fresh’s #JoeFreshFW14 collection. Make sure you go check my Twitter & Instagram pages @melsays to check it out! In Sochi, Canada’s slogan was #WeAreWinter, I therefore only found it fitting for Joe Mimran‘s FW14 collection to represent the great (& cold!) Canadian outdoors. Many collections often present clothes that are beautiful but not as practical for winter but Mimran’s latest offering presented practical, affordable & beautiful winter pieces. For the occasion, we were offered a rad black Joe Fresh toque along with information on the collection. On the runway last night we saw lot’s of chunky knits, oversized jackets, parkas, furry toques, graphic sweaters, side lace waxed jeans and lot’s of fur pieces. The color palette went from earthy tones to Joe’s signature orange. Some of my favorite pieces of the show were: the green biker jacket, the furry oversized camel coat and those green tartan trousers. After the show, everyone was also talking about the models’ side braids, they were definitely a hit! As per usual, the models walked down the runway to a super fun and energetic soundtrack. I think that what I love most about attending a Joe Fresh runway show is that everyone is always in the best of moods, dancing around, the models seem to be having fun and also Joe Mimran always seems so happy! Props to Joe Mimran and his team for another fun presentation! You guys hit it out of the ballpark again!

Ah yes!! The perfect way to end my week at WMCFW. Leather, fur & so many dreamy pieces. Over the past couple of seasons, I’ve definitely become a HUGE Mackage fan. I was thrilled to be greeted by a seat with my own name on it, way to make a girl feel special! I loved their runway set up with colorful leaves representing the fall. The show started with some beautiful fuchsia coats with black leather detailing for both ben and women. I loved that the models were sporting some Frends headphones. We then feasted our eyes on quilted bomber jackets and skirts, fur hats, fuzzy camo bomber jackets, fur shorts and skirts, leather pants for men & women as well as tartan from head to toe. Then, all of a sudden, two men dressed in leather onesies came to the runway to sweep away the leaves and make room for the “snow” for their winter portion of the presentation, clever! They presented a handful of warmer coats with fur detailing and a bunch of rad jackets. I also loved their variety of handbags, clutches and backpacks for men and women. Honestly, too many dreamy looks to choose from. I absolutely loved it all without exception! You can witness the beauty of the show below!

Thank you to all the designers and organizers for an amazing and incredibly inspiring week of fashion! Can’t wait to see what next season has in store!!

WMCFW SS14 Day 1 Recap

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending two runway shows at the tents located at David Peacaut Square in Toronto for World MasterCard Fashion Week.

I was really excited to see Beaufille, since I had heard of them through several local blogs and via instagram. When I was looking them up, their site caught my attention right away with a very grungy chic vibe, loved the old photographs of Courtney Love, Kate Moss, Nirvana & more! Their current FW13 collection is grungy goodness so I was thrilled to see what they had in store for SS14.

First, their logo is super rad! I loved the fact that they used a surfer rock band to play live during the show. The guys had mad style and chops! All the models had gelled back straight long hair, some were wearing retro shades, others had layers of dark necklaces and others had interesting mid-arm jewelry. I loved that their show start with a lot of whites, then slowly got darker with light prints, then foam green, then sand color, a few shimery fabrics, then navy blue and dark pieces. Their look is effortlessly cool and edgy without losing femininity. I loved their laced pants, their jackets and long flowy dresses. The intricate detail they added in some of their dresses was also a nice touch. Below are some of my favorite pieces from last night’s show. I can totally see myself wearing all of these pieces next summer! Great way to start the night!

I was really looking forward to the second show last night: Pink Tartan‘s SS14 collection. I had seen her two previous shows so I knew I’d been in for a treat. The show started with a beautiful short film. She also decided to start the show with some white dresses and coats. She slowly transitioned to navy blue by layering the blue onto the white pieces, to then pale blue, cream, then black, bold flowers, bright yellow and then finishing up with some black and white combinations and two stunning dresses at the very end. Pink Tartan really knows how to work with the shape of a woman. All of her pieces are always so flattering and I feel they could fit women of all ages and sizes. I adored her navy blue jacket and skirt ensemble. I was also seriously coveting those mid-calf black shimery skirts and the white button up shirt dress. I appreciated the fact that she used simple pointed toe flats to not overpower her creations. Pink Tartan’s designs make me wish I worked in a high fashion office or that I could attend a polo match or Sunday afternoon tea. She always puts a modern and elegant twist on every design she makes. I was once again very pleased with her collection!

It was also lovely to see some familiar faces last night! I was happy to see one of my favorite ladies @CrystalGibson for a few minutes. Not only is she an amazing person but she’s also a style inspiration!

Night off tonight but I’m back on Wednesday for more! What did you think of the first night?

Day 2 – WMCFW + CMW #DailyOutfit

Today is Day 2 at World MasterCard Fashion Week and also at Canadian Music Week. I had a stellar day shooting BRBR yesterday at Le Dolci in Toronto. The wonderful owner Lisa, let us use her kitchen and baked us a lovely BRBR cake. Check it out!

After shooting the show, I rushed over to see my first ever Pink Tartan runway show.  The place was packed! The show started off with some bright colors, long flowy coats and 50s & 60s-inspired flower prints. I really loved the bold blues, purples and pinks. The show continued with some lovely fur coats: some even had mixed colors. There were also a few leopard pieces, a handful of black and white dresses and coats, shimmery fabrics and lot’s of fur collars. One of the items I loved most, were the long leather gloves that all the models were wearing to accompany the coats and dresses. My top piece was without a doubt the multi-colored long fur jacket.  Though I don’t usually wear real fur myself, I still really loved the overall look of this coat!  You can see a few pics from the show below. Apologies for the quality of these photos, they really don’t do the collection justice. Looking forward to more Pink Tartan runway shows!

I also had the chance to meet a handful of lovely Toronto fashion bloggers including one of my recent favorites: Dainty Girl. She looked stellar with her black and white dress and Myles Sexton custom spike headband!

Today, I’ll be spending part of my day at the Marriott shooting interviews for BRBR.  Really looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new people! I decided to go with a bold red jacket, black and white stripes and a few gold/brass accessories.

Happy Monday everyone! Today is the start of one heck of a week for me! Not only is it Canadian Music Week, but it’s also World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto.  I’ve been attending Canadian Music Week since 2006 but this is only my second season attending Fashion Week in Toronto. I couldn’t be more excited to be splitting my time between two of my biggest passions: Music & Fashion.  Tonight, I’ll be heading to the Bustle and Pink Tartan runway shows before going to see Mackage and Joe Fresh later in the week. Also this week, I’ll be hitting up conferences at the Toronto Marriott for CMW as well as doing a bunch of interviews and live music sessions with artists.  Thursday, we’re taping a special BRBR show live from our showcase at The Gladstone Hotel.  There are still some tickets left, so if you’d like to attend or for more info, click here.  Friday, I’ll also be covering the INDIES for the show.  Basically, no rest until next week!

So to prepare for a crazy week, I got a super cute manicure yesterday in Liberty Village at X-Nail & Spa. They gave me an ombré blue and green shellac manicure that changes color like a mood ring depending on your temperature. I couldn’t be more stoked about how it turned out!
