Top 10 Albums Of 2013

Can’t believe yet another year has passed! And what a great year 2013 was for music, not only in Canada but internationally as well. Coming up with a Top 10 list is never easy and though this is the list that I chose for my blog post, I’m sure I’ll change my mind a few more times before the year ends. These are my favorite ten records of the year, all genres combined!

I created a special playlist on Deezer with tracks from each record. You can listen to it here: Melsays’ Top 10 Albums of 2013

10 – Jimmy Hunt – Maladie D’amour

maladie

60s/70s sounding romantic French pop. A fantastic lyricist and great production.

9 – The Strumbellas – We Still Move On Dancefloors

strumbe

The perfect combination between the folk tradition and pop. Catchy and uplifting throughout. Made me want to dance!

8 – Basia Bulat – Tall Tall Shadow

basia

Beautifully orchestrated and touching record. Her voice still gives me chills every time I hear her sing. Profoundly moving.

7 – Sebastien Grainger – Yours To Discover

sebas

Beyond cool and original 80s inspired rock with incredibly catchy melodies.

6 – Phantogram – Voices

phanto

The perfect electro-indie pop record. These guys blow me away each release with huge tracks every time.

5 – Koriass – Rue des saules

koriass

According to me, Quebec’s finest rapper. Clever and effective MC with great underlying beats.

4 – Drake – Nothing Was The Same

drake

One of the records I listened to most this year. Love the sincerity and variety in this record. Super strong follow up to the excellent Take Care.

3 – Young Galaxy – Ultramarine

tg

Grateful that a band like Young Galaxy is present in the Canadian music scene. I totally fell in love with their sonic universe on this record.

2 – Shad – Flying Colors

shad

Why Shad isn’t more popular baffles me. The wittiest, most positive and smartest rapper in Canada and one of the top rappers in the world if you ask me.

1 – Haim – Days Are Gone

haim

The most beautiful pop record that came out this year. These girls can’t be stopped. Catchy tracks, vocal melodies and killer music all along.

Honorable mentions also go to: Jordan Klassen, Katy Perry, Klô Pelgag, Les Soeurs Boulay, Justin Timberlake, Autre Ne Veut, Tegan and Sara and Chvrches.

What were some of your top records of the year? Anything I should check out? Let me know!

Early Riser #DailyOutfit

Today was one heck of an early wake up call for work but it was for a good cause. We had the pleasure of filming a performance and interview with Shad. Have you heard his new record Flying Colours? It’s honestly one of the best things I’ve heard all year. His rhymes are so clever, his music is powerful and so well crafted. I wouldn’t be surprised if his talent not only brings him across the border down south but also around the world. So nice to listen to hip hop artists that have a positive message, that have meaning in their songs and that make you reflect on life. It was a real pleasure to speak with him today! If you haven’t already, go listen to Flying Colours. In the meantime, here’s his first single “Stylin“:

I had the opportunity to stop by Biko Jewellery‘s sample sale this afternoon on the way home from work. So many sparkly goodies were being sold! There was already almost nothing left by the time I got there. I couldn’t be more thrilled for Corrine and couldn’t help but add to my collection while I was there 😉

This Week’s Ear Candy

Alright! You know the drill… Here are my favorite tracks and videos of the week:

Two years ago, when I attended Musexpo in Hollywood, I discovered a great up and coming band from Denver called Churchill. They absolutely blew everyone away during their showcase.  I hadn’t heard much of them since their showcase so I was happy to see a brand new video from them this week for their super catchy track called “Change”.  The band will be doing some dates across the southern US in the next couple of weeks.  They play some sick mandolin riffs!

On January 29th, the Toronto rapper, music and producer K-OS is back with a fifth record called BLack on BLonde.  This week, he streamed his entire record with commentary on Rdio.  My favorite track of the record is without a doubt “C.L.A.” featuring Travie McCoy. What a catchy tune! The entire record sounds great and features some of Canada’s top aritsts: Emily Haines from Metric, Sam Roberts, Shad, Corey Hart (yup!), Jay Malinowski, etc. In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s his excellent video for “The Dog Is Mine” featuring some of my friends, the lovely ladies of Magneta Lane (ps. Magneta Lane released a brand new tune this week from their upcoming record Witchrock called “Burn”. Listen to the track here: http://www.tweetsandtunes.com/tunes)

On Tuesday night, I went to see one of my friends Nicole Simone perform her first ever show as Dreamgirl Whatever, her new dream-pop project.  I’ve been listening to her tracks for quite some time now, and it’s the perfect kind of music to brighten up your day! She’s has a super sweet voice, knows how to write a catchy song with melodies that can stick in your head all day long.  Here’s her track “Say Your Name”.

There you have it!!

Have a lovely weekend!
Stay warm,

Mel xo
