5 Questions With: Pierre-Antoine De Myttenaere of SPRINGSIOUX

Springsioux is a Paris-based brand and concept store. I first heard of them through Offner a few years ago. What started off as a small brand of t-shirts by founder Pierre-Antoine De Myttenaere, has evolved into so much more. Over the past couple of years, Pierre-Antoine developed the brand with his girlfriend and business partner Alisa Gusakova. Today the Springsioux line includes silver jewelry, high end fur and leather pieces designed in collaboration with Parisian designer Quentin Veron, ponchos and t-shirts designed in collaboration with Parisian tattoo artist Eddie Czaicki, etc. Last summer, they inaugurated their concept store in Le Marais, the coolest neighborhood in Paris. Since then, they’ve had countless artists, models and celebrities come to their shop. Nikki Sixx, Bradley Soileau, Sarah Barthel from Phantogram and Miss Kittin, are just some of the people that have been spotted wearing Springsioux. They’ve also organized a ton of events at their shop for Paris Fashion Week, the launch of their special collections, etc. Pierre-Antoine and his team are currently working on a collaboration with a famous French DJ that will be out soon. They’ll also be launching a coffee corner inside their Le Marais shop, which might also include their very own blend of coffee inspired by South America. I’m excited to present to you all today, my 5 Questions With Pierre-Antoine De Myttenaere of Springsioux:

1) Can you talk to us about about the idea behind Springsioux? Your mission?

I created Springsioux at the time when I was in a new wave band in Paris. The goal was to link music and fashion together. Then, I went on tour in Russia and Alisa (tour manager/girlfriend) joined Springsioux to help develop a silver jewelry line based on the Native American culture. We want Springsioux to be more than a brand, it’s a spirit, it brings together people from different backgrounds to create something strong and different from mainstream trends. That is where our motto “alive in the darkness” comes from. We don’t present collections every season, we prefer to create something when the time is right, depending on our inspiration but mostly on the people we meet. That’s why we love to do collaborations with other designers or artists!

2) Where do you draw inspiration for your Springsioux designs?

It’s a mix between traditional cultures (Native American, Mexican…) because there is something mystical in them and we try our best to make their heritage last by creating the most authentic designs, and also rock n roll subcultures. For me, the best example of rock subcultures and fashion are Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood with the Sex Pistols because they found the right balance.

3) Who are your style icons?

The 80’s have a huge influence on us and I would definitely say… Nikki Sixx (Mötley Crüe), Grace Jones but I think the most important thing is attitude. Our “Springsioux man” can wear a skirt and still look masculine and mysterious and our “Springsioux woman” is strong and provocative.

4) What has been some of the most memorable moments thus far with Springsioux?

We went through several ups and down but some moments are forever engraved in our minds like when I received a phone call from a friend telling me that he saw Nikki Sixx wearing one of our rings during a festival… and also when we had pizzas and beers with all our friends on the floor of our empty store in Paris just after signing the lease!

5) For those who don’t know, you used to be in a band and you’re a big music fan. What are some of your current favorite artists?

Recently I discovered Black Atlass and I have to admit that the guy is just incredibly talented. I also love Phantogram and Coldcave, but when it comes to live music, I’m more into the louder stuff! One of my latest musical crushes is: The Balconies that I discovered on this blog. I think people just need to see them live, they will understand that I’m not exaggerating or falsely promoting them. These guys really give everything they’ve got on stage, from the first of seconds of their set, you feel like you’ve been slapped in the face!

Merci Pierre-Antoine!

Purple Lips #DailyOutfit

My makeup artist totally got my mood today! I was feeling a little grungy in the morning when I got up so the purple lips and dark eyes were the perfect addition to my look! Do you guys like purple lipstick?

I’m finally able to take my bike back out, couldn’t be more stoked!! Yay for spring!!

5 Questions With: Jacquie Neville of The Balconies

I first met Jacquie Neville almost five years ago now just after moving to Toronto. Back then, her band The Balconies had also just moved to Toronto from their hometown of Ottawa. Over the past couple of years, I’ve had the chance to watch The Balconies grow as a band and also see Jacquie improve and gain a ton of confidence as a performer. She definitely was born to be a star! The one thing I’ve noticed since day 1 is her super cool rocker chic look. I therefore wanted to know more about what inspires her style.  Her band The Balconies will be heading out on their 5th cross-Canadian tour in May with Head of the Herd followed by a slew of festival dates this summer and upcoming tours in Europe and the UK. They’ve already started writing their follow up to Fast Motions, which was just released in January. Here are my 5 Questions with Jacquie Neville:

1 – Can you talk to us about your style evolution from your teens until now? How would you describe your style today?

As a teenager my parents were supportive with my ever changing sense of “style”. Sometimes I concocted outfits that made them go:  “huh?!” but they understood that being a teenager was for discovering and inventing yourself. In my mid-teens I turned to the punk scene – I admired the sense of community and I felt I could relate easily to those around me. It didn’t matter if you were wearing the most recent pair of designer jeans – it was about the music and about wearing whatever you wanted and feeling confident about it. I often opted for black jeans and a black t-shirt; and it is still my go to. I feel most comfortable and like myself: Tom-boy-ish with a feminine twist I guess. If I want to feel a little fancier, I add a leather jacket or vest or sequin jacket. I try not to think too much about what I wear now because to me, it’s all about the music.

2 – Who are your style icons?

When I was a teenager I was fascinated by haute couture fashion and spent hours drawing my own “runway” outfits. For my thirteenth birthday my parents bought me a sewing machine and I created my own pieces for a while. I was captivated by Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen – that whole world was so unique and new to me; but it seemed unattainable and unrealistic for a girl living in a small town outside of Ottawa. I quickly realized that being fashionable didn’t necessarily mean you were stylish and vice versa. I discovered that being stylish is about how you wear something and wearing what works best for you and your body  – being comfortable in your own skin means you’ll be confident in your second skin. I admire Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, Freddie Mercury and Marceline from Adventure Time.

3 – How do you pick out your clothes for tour and stage? What are your tour must-haves?

Every time I pack for tour I glance into my suitcase and all I see is a mound of black fabric. Haha. I always tell myself “I should really get some colour in my wardrobe” but then I realize…it’s just not me. Black jeans, black tees, black blazers, leather vests and jackets…black boots. I also MUST ALWAYS have my feathers to wear in my hair. I call them my “Power Feathers”: a show never feels right without them.

4 – Who are some of your favorite designers and/or brands?

I get all my feathers from my friend Cara Said (She Said Jewelry) her pieces are so unique – I’m her biggest fan. On a daily basis, I covet everything from Springsioux: a store and label based in Paris – everything they create is incredible. I was lucky enough to visit their store last year and I got spoiled.

5 – What makes you feel good/confident as an artist and performer?

What makes me feel confident is knowing I am well rehearsed. Even if we don’t have a full rehearsal before a show, I always make sure to practice my guitar and vocal parts – I am constantly wanting to evolve and improve. Because I exert so much energy in our live shows, I make sure I sleep a lot, eat well and I also do a lot of interval training. It’s necessary to be physically fit for long tours: making sure my body is healthy, well-rested and strong guarantees good, high-energy shows…and won’t risk burning out.

Thanks Jacquie! Have blast on the road!

Chevy Cruze Diesel Adventure Recap

Last week I had the privilege of test driving a brand new Chevy Cruze Diesel from Chevrolet. I was extremely excited to be partaking in my first ever test drive and to be able to take this beautiful car home for the week!

Since I first got my drivers license 12 years ago, I’ve had the chance to rent a handful of cars for work and vacation. In addition, I also owned a car for over three years. It goes without saying that I’ve driven my share of vehicles over the years and none of them had been a Chevrolet.

It was therefore with much enthusiasm that I picked up my Chevy Cruze last Monday. My goal for the week: take the Chevy Cruze on as many adventures as possible to really see what the car was made of!

First off, I was thrilled to see I was getting a beautiful red car (red is my favorite!) for what would be one of the coldest week’s I’ve ever spent in Toronto since I moved here four years ago. Immediately when I sat down in the car, I was excited to see all of the car’s gadgets. The first thing that really caught my attention was the MyLink radio that came with a voice activated system, which could also work with Bluetooth or with the touch screen display. I was happy to see a USB port, auxiliary audio inputs (we’re in 2014 and some cars still don’t have them!!) as well as SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Since I always forget to bring my audio cable with me, I was happy to have some extra radio stations to choose from with the Satellite Radio feature.

Other things that immediately made me happy were the comfortable heated seats, that could easily be adjusted, Cruise Control, the Rear Cross Traffic Alert (which made it so easy to park all week!!) as well the spaciousness of the car. For a compact vehicle, I was pleasantly surprised by how big the trunk was and how much legroom was available for those sitting in the back seats.

So I took the Chevy Cruze on its first adventure, which consisted in first going to work and then spending the night running errands at Target and Ikea in Mississauga, two stores I rarely get to since I currently don’t own a car.

photo 1 (46)

photo 5 (10)The thing that I most liked after my first day of driving was the Side Blind Zone Alert, a super neat feature on my side mirrors that alerted me any time there was a vehicle in my blind spot. I know that even if I’m a super prudent driver, there’s been several close calls where I’ve almost gotten into an accident because I didn’t see a car when I was changing lanes. I think having this safety feature on your car will greatly reduce your risk of having that kind of accident.

IMG_4081Tuesday the adventure began with a drive to work (driving to work reduced my commute time by 45mins!) and after work I took the Cruze to my favorite place to shop for healthy food in the city – Whole Foods Market. Driving around with the Cruze reminded me of just how lucky people are to not have to carry big grocery bags around with them on the streetcar or outside. Shopping with a car is so hassle-free. I then followed that up with a nice dinner at the current Toronto hotspot – Playa Cabana Hacienda. I had heard a lot about it but had yet to visit because it is pretty far north in the city. They have an amazing churros poutine dessert, it’s to die for! I capped off the night with a little visit at my friends’ album release party.

photo 2 (41)On Wednesday I took the car again to meet one of my girlfriends at my favorite vegan restaurant in the city – Hogtown Vegan. Look at that Southern Combo below, it was SO Yummy! The day was really cold so I made full use of the heated seats and features like the defogger. I think it’s so important when driving in the winter time to have a good defogging system in your car as well as good wipers because of all the dirt and slush that gets thrown onto your windshield while driving.

photo (63)I was really excited about my Thursday adventure because it was an activity I’d been meaning to do for quite some time but had never been able to get there. I decided to take Offner, my partner in crime, to Skyzone, the indoor trampoline park located in Mississauga. It was great to take the car on the highway again to see just how great the traction, acceleration and suspension was. The car proved to be solid on all fronts! We had such a blast at Skyzone- not only did we get to jump around on all sorts of trampolines but we also got to do flips, play basketball and dodgeball. I totally recommend checking it out!

photo 3 (29)

Friday after work, Offner and I headed to Polson Pier to watch the sun set. Polson Pier is my favorite view of Toronto! It was a cold but beautiful day so we also took that opportunity to take a few lovely pics of the car.

IMG_3992 IMG_4001

IMG_4016I couldn’t believe that after 5 consecutive days of driving to and from work and around Toronto and Mississauga, I was still left with more than half a tank of gas!

All week I had done a bunch of city driving so I was excited to take the car to the country side and on the highway for a longer period of time. So Saturday, Offner and I headed up North to spend the day antiquing. What made the trip even better was that it was snowing during the entire day, which made it the perfect occasion to see how well the car handled the snow. On the 4+ hrs of driving we did, never did we feel unsafe. The car reacted well when I needed to break rapidly, steering was easy and the car was also heavy and sturdy enough to not slip very much while driving over snow. We were both very impressed! The Cruise Control was super easy to use and always a relief to have when driving several hours. Though we didn’t find what we were looking for, we did bring back some cute little vintage teacups!

IMG_4177Sunday we took the car on a last spin around the city. We made full use of the radio system, listening to new tunes loudly in the car. As a music fan, I can say that the makers of this car definitely did a good job with the sound system. Every type of music we listened to sounded great.

Before returning the car on Monday morning, I filled up the tank with diesel. I had never driven a diesel car (except a tour van!) before but my dad has always owned and vouched for diesel cars. A lot of cars in Europe still run on diesel but it seems a lot rarer here in North America. I was astonished at how great the Chevy Cruze was on gas. An average of 4.2L per 100km (67 mpg) on the highway & 7.5 L per 100km in the city? Amazing! What I also learned about the car after doing a bit of reading is that the 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel or as they call the Chevy Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel has the best highway fuel efficiency of any gasoline or diesel powered car in Canada. In addition, the car also meets the very strict new clean diesel standards plus the noise and vibrations that were once associated with older diesel cars are no longer there.

All in all, my 3 favorite things about the Chevy Cruze Diesel were:

-Side Blind Zone Alert

-Gas mileage

– MyLink system

All in all, I truly had a wonderful week with my Chevy Cruze! I was sad to say goodbye to the car but the Chevrolet staff were super kind and even offered me a lift to work after dropping off the car at the dealership.

If you’re on the lookout for a new car, I highly recommend checking out the 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel. The car is safe, has every feature one could possibly want/need, is cool and will give you more bang for your buck!

How was your weekend? I had a fabulous time in the city with my childhood best friend! We had a tasty dinner at one of my favorite spots – Terroni. Also went for a beautiful run on the waterfront, enjoyed some pampering at The Ten Spot and did a bit of shopping on Queen West. Finished our night with the Keanu Reeves directorial debut film – Man of Tai Chi (already available on iTunes), which was unfortunately riddled with clichés and lot’s of cheese. That said, there were some well choreographed fight sequences.
